I purchased two repossessed Andersen 40ST winches. I'm using appropriately sized lines. The sprung top plate keeps popping up and peeling away at the plastic cover. The rigger installs new parts and it does it again. I saw an old post regarding this but there wasn't a satisfactory reply. Any guesses or suggestions? I'm thinking I have a problem with the guy doing the repair.

I've had a pair of Andersen ST 40's on my H33-C for about 6 years now. Not the first hint of problems. Andersen is the only winch I'll buy.

I'd contact Andersen if I could. I know a guy who used to run a side business making replacements for the plastic tops on Andersen winches in New Zealand. The original plastic rings get burnt up in the tropics. The OEM replacements were super expensive there (sole importer issues I think). Anyway, my first guess from your description would be that the plastic top on your winch is shot and you need a new one. If you've already done that (ie. put on a new from the factory top) then I'm clueless -- not much else goes wrong with those winches.

Are your circular retainer springs in place? it sounds like the are missing.

There should be a thin groove around the recess that the top plates go in and a spring that looks like a flattened key ring has to be wound into the groove to hold down the plates. Do you have them?

If not get some.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. I've written to Andersen with no reply yet so I thought I'd try here while I wait.... As I recall the story, the whole boat was repossessed and the mechanic doing the work took steps to get back the money he'd spent on parts.

A happy ending! Andersen Winch moves to the head of the class.

After Andersen Winch reopened from their summer holiday shutdown, I got a reply to my inquiry. This is what he wrote:

Some years back we had a production of a batch of 40ST winch drums where it later on turned out that the nub on the winch drum on which the upper self-tailing grip disk is sliding was slightly too short when the maximum line diameter (12 mm) was in use, meaning that the grip disk could override the nub. It seems to me that this what you have experienced. Even though that the normal warranty period is long past on your winches we do in this case offer a “extended warranty” for this problem, which means that we will offer you replacement winch drums free charge. The only costs we are asking you to cover is the freight and custom cost back and forth to Denmark( we need to have you old drums retuned since we are re-working them for replacement use).

I would expect nothing less considering the pricing of their winches.
