I finally got my boat into the water this weekend & sailed it for the first time & so a few questions arise. 1) I see a shroud cleat attached to both sides of my side stays. What are their purpose? 2) which sail is the mast winch normally used for? 3) What is the center board made of & What is the 192's draft w/ board up & down. 4) How can I get at the nuts securing the outboard bracket to the boss on the stern? I need to replace that bracket. Many thanks in advance, Jerry

Jerry, some answers:

1) Usually for a pennant halyard. There may be a single block affixed to the underside of the spreader. Maybe not. Maybe there's some evidence that a block once was... Traditionally, pennants and flags are flown from the starboard spreader, but I see plenty of people with both port and starboard. Although I want a dedicated pennant halyard, I hesitate due to concerns that flapping wind will pull the spreader tip down on the shroud, because my spreader brackets have a bit of up and down play. Port tack to windward with a good breeze, and the starboard upper gets a little bit of slack. Also, the commonly available C. Sherman Johnson shroud cleat is not supposed to fit down to 1/8" wire, though I have not yet tried to make it do so.

2) The original sailplan called for a Schaefer wire luff furler on the jib. A wire luff fuler, one that winds the sail around a wire in the luff (rather than having a rigid or semi-rigid foil that goes over the forestay) relies on halyard tension to tighten the luff and reduce luff sag to leeward. Therefore, the jib halyard came down the port side of the mast, and onto that winch mounted to the side of the mast, in order to get sufficient luff tension. The main is small enough there's no need to winch it up.

3a) The centerboard is a fiberglass clamshell with foam inside. At least I'm pretty sure there's foam inside.
