I dunno if I would , Probably wait a long time

ask about it later, and then if I tell them about it, ask push for a big refund since they never knew it was missing and would have become 'found money'. Small boutique shop I would feel worse over it, especially if they helped me . But the behemoths like home depot and west marine I'm not so sure. Long story short. I went to a doctor, Emergency situation, he double charged my Insurance twice what they should have. I ask the Dr office and they say. "Oh submit it anyway, your insurance will probably pay it". I tell the Insurance company to investigate and not pay . Well "Net-Net" the insurance company payed the extra charges and then came AFTER ME for them getting overcharged. I said no way, it was me who help the insurance company, they still try forever to make ME pay. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to do the right thing.

Anon, honest but wrong

People like you make me crazy. You are saying it's Ok to steal from big companies, yes? As my business grows, more people like you, think it's ok to rip me off! Stealing is stealing!! It doesn't matter if it's mom and pops hardware or Wal-mart. This isn't Robin Hood! At least I can applaud your honesty in admitting you are a person of little honor, integrity, and character.

Don never said I would actively steal from anyone

There is a difference between that and passively standing by. Never said it was morally right. But if your organization is that inept, is it my responsibility to clean up after you and make sure I paid you 6 months later? Still not morally right Don't get mad at me, run your business better and you'll get paid. I guess everybody on this board is perfect or nobodies honest with themselves. Still not saying I would do something like this for any company I purchased something from because I know that is $$ right out of your pocket. But if my marina which is continually gouging me year after year with increased fees, reduced services and ever present restrictions forgot to charge me for something, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't say a dang thing. The know they have a monopoly and are just reaming the boaters, because there is nowhere else to go. Also they start restrictions that say I can't work on my boat and they say I have to pay them big $$ to have them to do the work and its mandatory. If you want to complain and not pay they will impound your boat. (You all know the marinas I'm talking about. They are going beyond making money and into gouging)

Well, well, well...

Are you THAT ashamed of the statement that you just made that you have to post anonymously? You DON'T have to pay the marina fees...you DON'T have to pay marina mechanic rates...you DON'T have to go boating...and most importantly...you DON'T have the BALLS to admit your identity. As far as I'm concerned posting anonymously as you have, you've admitted that you know what you're saying is wrong. Stealing is stealing no matter what way you put it. People make mistakes. Companies are run by people. Mistakes happen. Billing errors are made. If you know that an error has been made and do nothing to bring it to someones attention you are stealing...plain and simple.

joke from retailer's side

Of course, I would pay up, for all the previous listing reasons already noted. But here is a moral dilema I heard while in retail: A lady comes into your store and buys something. She hands you a $50. dollar bill. Later, you find out she actually handed you TWO fifties, stuck together. Moral dilema: ? ? ? Do you tell your partner?

Pay it FORWARD

Rent and watch the movie "Pay it Forward." You'll never wrestle with your temptation. You'll KNOW what you must do. (Otherwise, if you do nothing, you'll be waiting for the next storm, or the next lightening bolt to "get you" and make you pay-it-back in spades. Fair winds to you!!

Just Curious

Andy, Why would it make a difference if it was West Marine?

A lesson from Robin

Hey Rob, Take a lesson from Robin Hood. He didn't take from the rich to give to the poor as some liberals wrongly purport. He took from an overbearing, over regulating, overtaxing government and returned property, wealth and liberty to the people. Honesty in business dealings, whether you’re the seller or the buyer, is required for a civilized society to function. Happy (fusion powered) sails *_/), MArk

Actually Robin Hood isn't fiction

At least most historians are pretty sure he did, although Robin Hood wasn't his real name and didn't do half the things that legend credits him with...he was really little more than a local social activist, but he captured popular imagination and his legend took off from there. But then, most heroes are MUCH larger in death they ever were in life. They've never found his grave...there's some evidence that he went off with Richard the Lionhearted to fight in the Crusades and died while he was away...but they're fairly certain they've found the graves of some of his "merry men"...Friar Tuck and Little John, anyway... and there's reason to believe that a Lady Margaret? Martha? (her real name did begin with M, but it wasn't Marian) Somebody who's buried in a tomb with the rest of her family somewhere near Nottingham was Maid Marian. Btw...Lady Godiva actually lived too. Fun stuff to search out if you're interested in this sort of thing.
