Can anyone out there describe the correct way to moor a boat. I need to moor a 23 ft. sailboat. I would like to make my own mooring instead of paying a $500 seasonal rental fee. Also, what legalities do I need to be aware of? Anything else? Tank you. Matthew

Moorings

Matthew - There are lots of things written about moorings. I would start with the 'Advisor' in the West Marine catalog or with the Chapman book. Do a search on 'mooring' on www.google.com and get more than you wanted. Essentially its a heavy block or mushroom depending on bottom, a chain 1.5 time water depth, a slightly light chain equal to water depth, and a float to hold the whole thing up. A line runs from the top of the chain to the boat. As far as how big, ask locally, it varries depending on how sticky the bottom is. Legality varries hugely from locale to locale - I'd have to advise you to check with your local harbor master. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Me Too

I'm looking to moor a 25 foot sailboat as well. I was told the MI DNR sets a limit on number of boats docked or moored based on frontage owned. (I don't know the numbers) Chapmans Piloting talks about mushroom anchors (HEAVY) or using 3 smaller anchors in a radial patern leading to a common chain. (doesn't give size or type) There are some kinds of auger or screw type of anchorages as well as huge weights. I'm still looking for info to do my own.
