I need to install a mooring outside my marina to use because at low tide we can't get in/out. We are on the hudson river in 20 ft of water and a mud bottom. The boat is a Hunter 31 (weighs 5 tons) The club has a 200lb mushroom they offered to sell me for $200. Will this be heavy enough? In heavy weather we would plan to be in our slip. Opinions please.

The formula for any mushroom anchor is 10 pounds of anchor for every foot of boat. So a 31 foot boat get a 300 pound anchor. But why not add a little insurance ad get a 400 pounder, that way when it's howling at 3 in the mornimg you can sleep knowing that you have that extra holding power...

200# mushroom
is a good start - you need more weight, but it doesn't have to be all in one piece. Put it down, then get another 200# and chain them together. The good thing about mushrooms is that they will work their way down in mud/silt, possibly to the point where they are unretrievable.
