My 1986 H23 did not have any bow or stern mooring cleats. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that had installed any on this boat and were they had placed them. I am trying to decide wether to use one cleat on the bow or two. Thanks...

Check Photo form

Check the photo form, even though it is a 26,it is likely close to the 23. Two is always better then one.

mooring cleats,

there was an earlier thread re , this , see archives or just scroll, farther, one person had installed by cutting hole in anchor locker to install cleats and staniless stell backing plates another had done something similiar, i have same problem on 23 and just do some very unsailorly things at our slip on bow i have two , short lines from dock to eyebolt in bow, forget name, then another line from eye in bow back to , dock at aft area of boat, and then , run dock lines to jib sheet cleats, I know it sounds nutty but works, and no drilling, Mike

My H-23 does not have bow mooring cleats, but at the forward end of the anchor locker is a steel bar at deck level, of sufficient lenght to fasten two dock lines. These secure the bow nicely. The stern has similar rods on each quarter. Securing the anchor lines for my two anchors was another story. Anyone interested? Keith Smoot snark11@aol.com

Perko

I installed 2 Perko cleats (with the "pass through arch") on my bow--one on each side, of course. It was VERY easy. Just placed them where I wanted them, marked the holes, and drilled through the deck. I squirted 3M 5200 sealant into and around each hole, and then bolted the cleats down, using hefty stainless washers as backing plates. Happy Sailing! - Kris Cox

Backing??

So Kris, where exactly is the backing located? Inside the anchor locker? Did you have to install inspection ports for access?? Everyone is talking about cleats but few mention backing and/or access for backing??? Thanks, Tom

Cleat Location

Tom: I mounted the cleats just aft enough so that the bolts protrude into the cabin--at the forward end of the v-berth and above the interior side shelves. This allows full accress to the bolts (and whatever you chose to use for backing), while keeping the cleats surprisingly far forward on deck. I hope this helps! - Kris
