Chapman Piloting

John: Recommend you get a copy of "Chapman Piloting, Seamanship and Boat Handling", the 63 edition being written by Elbert Maloney. 856pp., 1999. Probably there is a newer edition as well. This book contains a wealth of information, including quite a bit about mooring. For its size the book is fairly inexpensive, and it is probably available in pulic libraries as well. From my perspective, its what is down at the bottom of the mooring that counts a lot more than the buoy. Dick.

grab it !

John, Dick is right about Chapmans, but whatever you use, it doesn't have to be very large. The important thing is to have some sort of whip attached, so you can grab it easily from your deck without having to risk life and limb and boat trying to snag the bouy. I sail single- handed and I can sail right up to my mooring and grab it without any hassles (usually, but that is another story). david
