Mooring Ball and Pendants

Hello everyone:

I purchased a brand new used 1984 Hunter 25.5. I need to get a mooring ball and pendants. The boat weighs 4500lbs.

I have looked a pendants online and there is a huge difference in price. I think I am looking for 3/4 inch rope as the cleat has 1" clearance.

Does anyone know of pendants I could get that don't cost hundreds of dollars each? I was hoping for less than $100 per. I need 2, for club rules as well as my peace of mind.

What is the best size and style mooring ball?

Tom, Your most likely over guessing your needs. 2, 1/2" or 5/8" 3 strand should hold your boat fine. but if your club requires 3/4" ask around who does splicing, buy the line and have them do the loops. http://www.defender.com/category.jsp?path=-1|10391|311417&id=322365&start=21&results=10&sort=products

You can make your own mooring pendants, using good three strand nylon rope. I made my own when I was on a ball for about $20 a piece- that was about twenty feet of rope, two screw shackles and two thimbles.
An eye splice around a thimble is not difficult and once you know how to do it, you can make your own pendants and dock lines for life.:dance:

I do not recommend buying a pendant with an eye splice for the cleats, which prevents you from leaving one longer than the other as a safety.

My boat is in the Hudson (Nyack) as well. We tried the hard mooring ball first but found that the boat often sails into the ball - which scuffs the hull. We now use a softer inflatable ball which works well. Some folks at our club pull the ball up on deck when their boats are moored to avoid this issue.
Our 7000# boat is held in place by a 250# mushroom anchor and required chain.

A good p$lAce I found that wazs reasonable was rope works out of new bedford, ma. With regards to the mooring I also used a 250# for a 5000# boat then we had a hurricane and I draged the mooring to the beach and nearly total a boat that was three months old from the factory. As a rule now I don't go with the minimum required but tend to go up one size as a little insurance.

3/4 is big time overkill for your boat. I used to keep a 5500# boat in a poorly protected harbor on 5/8 and never had any problem. I think 1/2 would have been fine. Your main enemy is chafe. Do not just loop the lines over your bow cleat as if things get rough those loop can pop off. Work out a system so the lines cannot cross over each other and chafe that way. I kept my boat on a mooring in that poorly protected harbor for 10 years and never even had a close call despit other boats having problems.

I think I am going to try to splice for the pendants, there are some good videos on Youtube for this, plus I can ask for some help at the club.

I will get a soft mooring ball, think I will have at least one line that is 3/4, I am OK with overkill on at least one line.

when I learned to splice, my splicing mentor told me if the splice looks right, it is right. If it looks wrong, it is wrong.

Ouch. Even paying West Marine prices for the material that's about a $25 premium just to have someone put 2 eye splices in the line. I think I'd make my own splices at that price. (not to mention line making practice is a good thing.)
