Hi, Looking at a used hunter 260 with trailer. Can I leave this trailer-able boat for summer mooring? Do I need to bring the swing keel up? Thanks in advance! Jay

Yes and yes

I have mine in the water all season, which for me is April to October. Keep the swing keel and rudder up when you leave it - and put some ablative / anti-fouling paint on her bottom! Enjoy!

Why keep the swing keel up?

Is this to prevent growth on it? I would think that it would make boat sway more on its mooring??

mooring in salt water

The boat will be kept in salt water. If I put the keel down, should i be concern stuff growing inside the centerboard slot?

Not being flippant but...

...the critters will grow where they want, up or down makes no difference. My 26 is in Bayshore at a slip where the keel must be up. alan

Alan is right. Just exercise the centerboard regularly and you'll be OK

what to look for in a used H260

This forum is awesome!!! Thanks for replying to my questions! We live in Babylon, NY. After some research, we are deciding on buying a used Hunter 260 (vs Macgregor 26). I am hoping to meet/talk to local H260 owner, for some real world advice from actual owners before purchasing one. What to look when buying a used H260? Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated! Reply offline: jhuang.hunter260(at)zoemail.net

The center board is just effective when sailing

upwind. If you are going to leave the boat in the water in excess of three weeks i would have the bottom painted includying the center board and slot with ablative anti-foul paint. Do exercise the center board frequently but wheter you leave it up or down won't make much difference.

moringa trailer sailer

I have had my hunter 216 on a mooring for several years and my previous boat on a mooring for 10 years. I usually leave it with the center board up Last year the hydraulic cylinder that raises the centerbard broke. I left it in the wateruntil the end of the season about two monts with the centerboard down. That worked fine also. The oly problem I have ever had was the swivel falling apart. If you use a galvinized swivel replace it every year. Better yet use a stainless swivel. They are initialy more expensive but probably cheaper in the long run. Especially if it prevents the boat from breaking loose. I attatch one pendant to the bow eye used for pulling the boat up on the trailer with a snap hook. I use a second longer pendant as a backup to a cleat on the bow. Gary
