I am the soon to be owner of an '88 Legend 35. I have been doing some reading on the differences between the 35/35.5.

The biggest difference as far as I can tell is the aft berth being athwartship on the 35.5 and fore aft on the 35.

I really like the athwartship berth as it gives both occupants some headroom.

From looking at it, It seems that the way they accomplished it is by moving the bulkhead which steals some room from the stbd cockpit locker.

This seems a worthwhile tradeoff. Has anyone done this?

Speaking only as someone who has spent a little time sailing at night, I would not like a berth to be athwart, especially on a sailboat. The largest motion is generally rolling which means you're sleeping with your head higher then lower than your feet. Then there is sailing on changing tacks. Trying to sleep standing up in your bunk would be hard enough, but what do you do if there is a tack change in the night?

At anchor, it might be the better orientation, because the main motion at anchor is pitching. When you are free to swing with the wind and waves, most of the time, they come head on. If there is traffic, however, rolling, again, might be quite disconcerting when sleeping athwart. Just some thoughts to consider. I've never had the experience.

The good thing about doing this, is it would give you a large enough berth to pick your orientation. Also, I would think that while sleeping underway, you're best in the salon with a leecloth.
