My ODay 28 is an 83, launched in 84 that I have had for the past 11 years and sail it on the Long Island Sound out of Rye, NY. I have repowered the the boat with a Westerbeke 18 HP which was helpful, albeit expensive once the boat yard got done with all their chores. This boat was always a little underpowered for some of the conditions we sail in, in my area and eastward toward Block Island Sound.

The one thing that has bothered me is where ODay decided to seat the traveler - right between the companionway and taking up some seating area in the cock pit. I have seen a few boats on the site where the owners have built an arched beam and placed the traveler over the sliding hatch over the companionway entrance. If anyone can give me some suggestions and the type of materials used etc. I would be very grateful for the help. I have found that aspect of the design to be lacking and also not terribly comfortable when taking a few adults out on a brisk day when we have to do a lot of tacking etc.

Ok, I have a dumb question. What does the traveler do? I know how it works but how does it add performance/convenience? Please ignore if this is hijacking this thread.

I am looking at the (lack of) traveler situation also. On the bridge deck is not the most inconvenient I have seen. Some of the cabin top type are not back far enough on the boom; other boats have them further aft and sometime right n the middle of the cockpit.

My '80 came with no controls for the traveler, just a track like the genoa track. Hard to deal with under load. Do you have control lines?
