Mr. Howard Chapelle said in his book on wooden boat building that you need a moaning chair. It is for those times when you have come to the point of wondering, " what have I gotten myself into?" So I ask those who have rebuilt, refurbished, or brought back from the dead ,something that eventually became a boat you were pleased with, " Did you have a need for a moaning chair?" Shall we find one for Patrick or must he decide on one of his own? :D

That's what instructor

John Posin of L.H. Bates Voc. Tech. boat building program in Tacoma Washington meant when he said the most important tool in the shop was the chair..........the chair you sat in to think before you cut..

Ross Yes!

Back when was really into it and my son was here more we built 4 strip canoes, and restored a couple old town wood canvas ones. designed and built a one off 15ft solo canoe that was wood canvas too. The Moaning chair was the most important tool for sure! We had a moaning chair at the seaport muesuem boat shop too when I was a volenteer for awhile.

That is an important tool

One I use all too frequently. However I name it something a little different, more like my "How am I gonna fix the screwup I just made" chair, but the language is a bit saltier..

I haven't had a need for a moaning chair in regards to my boat. But as for other things in life, well thats a different story... Manny
