One of my maintenence items on our new 1975 H27 was to inspect the mixing ell for problems, I have read where this is a possible point of failure.
I noticed what appeared to be a slight crack in the 180 deg. U so I removed the entire assembly for further inspection. There was indeed a crack, running right across the threaded section. I got a new one on order and decided I would help the crack along with a hammer and cold chisel, as it would make disassembly a lot easier. A few well placed blows and.... The ell cracked in half exposing exhaust and water ports that are almost clogged shut. This was not visiable by looking into each end with a flashlight.
I will post pictures tonight. I cannot belive the engine ran with such a restricted exhaust flow and I cant believe it didn't over heat with minimal water flow. If you have an older boat It might be wise to check out this component!!!

More info when you can BS.

What engine do you have? Look forward to seeing the photos. My H27 was repowered with a 1992 perkins so hopefully it's not in bad shape yet.

The engine is a original YANMAR SB-8. I've attached a photo. You can see how clogged the exhaust and water passages are. I could not see this looking into each end or feel it when I stuck my finger into the passages.
