Mixing elbow - Royce

Do you have to have a u elbow? Assuming I'm going to have a anti-siphon from the cooling water, and a waterlock below the engine. What does a u elbow do for me compared to a straight exhaust fitting? Royce - did you add a U elbow to your Vetus? Thanks all.

yes, but

No. The mixing of exhaust and water is done in the heat exchanger outlet, and I am not able to isolate the water inject to install a siphon. I did add a vented loop in the raw water supply to the exchanger. I finally have a picture and will attach it. I ran it for the first time in the boat last weekend and everthing went well. How are you progressing in your repowering? Royce

Water inject elbow

John, I don't remember what engine you have, but it has to have somewhere the exhaust and water are mixed. In some engines this is done with a mixing elbow where the water is injected on the down stream side to prevent water from backing into the engine. My new engine doesn't have one but is done as I described in the previous post. My old engine the exhaust came out of the head and went up with some screwed pipe and a mixing elbow was screwed on at the top where the mixture then was directed to the water lift muffler. These mixing elbows do rust out and are kinda pricey. My last one I fabricated with some SS pipe and a little welding. Let me know how you are doing. Royce

Looks Great

Royce, Looks great. Very clean, and plenty of room. I like that your engine has the forward facing change cover for the impellor. Was that stock or did you add somehow? I've done very little on my re-power. Old engine is out, and I'm cleaning, getting the DIesel tank out and the then I'm going to remove the skeg & rudder to re-align and re-bed. I'm not in a big rush though. Still haven't decieded on a new engine. I like the Vetus 3.09, but I'm not sure if it's too much HP. But it's $ 1,000 lees than a Yanmar 18HP or a Beta 20HP. I've looked at it more, and obviously you've done it, so I'm not worried about having to make a lot of modifications to fit the Vetus. It's a shame Vetus doesn't make another HP between 16 and 25. It would be a definite for me if they still made the 3.10 like yours. So to the elbow, I follow you from your second post. Thanks for the update. I look forward to the report after she goes in the water. What did you end up using for the prop? John

Engine is standard

John, the Vetus 3.09 is smaller that the 3.10 in the overall length. The 3.10 is rated at 25hp at 3600 rpm and then also they rate it at 22hp at 3200 rpm. I don't think there is much difference in the hp between the 3.09 and the 3.10. The 3.09 should be easier with the reduced overall length. The waterpump location was the standard location for that engine. I think on the 3.09 they moved it to the side. I removed my skeg and rudder last haul out. I glassed over the joint on the skeg after I bolted it back on. I think I told you I put in a larger fuel tank. I removed it from behind the engine. My new one, a Tempo 18 gal, I installed under the quarter berth. Good luck Royce
