mixing elbow blues

I was replacing my exhaust hose. I had much trouble attempting to fit it back onto the mixing elbow so I removed the riser and the mixing elbow. I found lots of gunk on the fitting. Once I was able to see inside I thought it needed replacing. In my attempt to remove the elbow the riser cracked. I've been told that I should have heated it up much more until it glows before attempting to break the seal. I hope this helps.

Silver lining

You got to replace the mixing elbow, which they say is not worth cleaning because it's so caked up with carbon and rust. That alone is a big accomplishment.
