Mistery Water Leak

I have a 1981 Catalina 30. I get up to 2 cups of collecting in the small storage compartment behind the cabin seat on the starboard side, but I cannot locate a source. Any ideas? Can it be something as simple as heavy condensation forming on the inside wall? This seems like alot of water, however. Also, no water collects in the compartment that is behind the seat on the port side, although it is moist to the touch. I have looked for leacks around the metal plates on the deck, but have not found evidense of leakage around the bolts. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just a thought

Are there any fill hoses from the deck that run through that side? Check for leaks where they come through the deck. I had the same problem, although I have an '87, the water leaked through the deck plate joint and ran down the hose and driped off before going into the h2o tank. Good luck!

Leaks

I think your model has cockpit drains. Check where they go through the cockpit sole and see if it is leaking there.

One possibility

The vent tubing for the water storage on my C30 are on the starboard side and one comes up in the storage area you mention. It's a long shot but worth a check.

Mistrey H2O leak

I have a 1975 Catalina 30 and had water collecting in the locker below the starboard settee and below the nav station. It turned out to be the fitting to the pressure water pump on the H2O tank that lives under that settee.

tricky to find, but I fixed mine

I have a 1982 model that had the same exact problem. I loked at chain plates, deck fittings, worried that the deck was detaching, etc. The problem actually turned out to be the anchor locker! The back two corners of the locker (upper corners) are not sealed. If your anchor well lid seal is worn out water will run around the lid, slide along the underneath side of the deck to the hull/deck joint. It then runs along the top of the hull (when the boat is heeled) back as far as the nav station on both sides! It took me forever to figure this one out. I ended up fiberglassing both corners and putting a ridge of glass on the underneath side of the deck to deflect water away from those corners. In hind sight glassing might not have been the best solution if there is any flexing. Apparently there are better sealers for gaps like that. If you are getting the water after a sail then likely this is your problem if you are out in any kind of surf. I sail where water over the bow is common. Richard

Leak Option

I fixed a similar leak in my Catalina 30. I found the leak originating in the bottom rear of the window above the seat. The window gasket (for lack of a better term) proved to be deterioriated at the bottom. I own a 1982. At first I thought I might be able to get away with taking the window out and siliconing it. No way. Replacement is the only way. Where do you get the part? Catalina in California.
