I need some sage advice from some of you Hunter 23.5 owners....I've located a 1995 23.5 in the general area of my home which is, little if any, used, but missing some critical hardware..hardware like the boom, mast staywires, the spreader bars, jibsail, etc. Does anyone have any experience with the cost of these items....the boat is currently on a sale lot in a "make offer" type of situation. I find it hard to "look" at the boat and assess what is really missing. The boat appears to be "new", yet 5 years old, having been cannibalized for parts, for whatever reason, by a Hunter dealer prior to going bankrupt. Am I foolish to consider buying the boat in such a condition and paying the cost of outfitting what's missing? Anybody out there have a good plan as to how to "assess" what is missing? thanks, Bob Smith/Huntsville, AL

Create a project budget and go for it!
Bob, assuming the boat has no major damage . . .it is watertight, etc.. Fully operational the boat should be worth 9 to $10,000. So any amout you spend that doesn't exceed the market value should be recoverable. Some of the items you are considering are available on this web site (jib sail is about $700.00). Call mike Thomas at Hunter Marine (see "Factory Connection" on this web site for telephone number) for cost of mast and boom or other parts. West Marine catalog can give you a good general idea on the cost of standing and running rigging. It will not be inexpensive. This sounds like a great project! Good luck! Bob, I don't know about the crazy part, but I have an Idea for you. I recently bought a 1994 23.5 that was clean but needed some updates. West Marine offers a first time boat owners deal. For 2 weeks you get everything at cost. At least they did that for me. I saved close to $800.00 I'd guess. Sounds like a fun project. Let us know what you decide.

You are crazy for even considering a boat (hole in the water that you pour money into). Try contacting Hunter and see if they can supply everything you need except the mast. As far as a jib is concerned there are MANY lofts around that sell used sails that will probably work. Make an offer based on the replacement of the parts and some room for what you don't know about.

to make a really unique boat. If what is there can be had cheap go for it. But think about what could be done different when you buy the new rigging. Perhaps a taller mast and shorter boom or a longer boom and a shorter mast? Furling main? Last time I ordered a part from US Spar they spoke as if the parts were getting hard to come by so check all of that out first their number is 904 462 3760. They are nice folks but I would hate to need something in a hurry from them. I would bet unless you get a great deal that you could buy one for close to what you are going to put out but you are going to have in essence a new boat. If you need a picture or a copy from the manual let me know and I will send it your way.

Verify parts specs
Should you decide to take on the project of refitting the boat, obtain a copy of the manual from Hunter so you can identify what parts appear to be required, or missing, but do not use their parts specifications as I have found them to be wrong. I ordered a number of parts based on the specs, yep stupid me trusted the printed word and didn't verify the specs, so I incurred all sorts of shipping costs on parts that don't fit. I am compiling a compendium to correct those errors and would be happy to furnish them to you when completed. Good luck with the project.

I have to wonder why a (prior) dealer would cannablize a perfectly good sailboat for parts if he could sell it whole for alot more. Does the seller have clear title? I'm sure you have already investigated this. Anyway, I too recommend you contact Hunter and try to stay stock. However, on sails, definitely try a few lofts for used sails. Should be able to find some good bargins.
