I need some advise to replace the halyard once it has been pulled out of the mast. I was working on the interior of my boat in the back yard when I popped my head out of the companionway and saw my 3 1/2 year old pulling the last few feet of halyard out of the top of the mast. thanks David Oberholtzer "Hydrotherapy"

Re-install halyard....

Dave, Sorry Dave but it took me awhile to stop haughing, I have a 4 year old. Aint we go fun!! I'm don't know your boat specificly but here's some general stuff I hope you can adapt to your mast. 1. You may need to remove your mast cap and/or foot. If you do, It's not to hard to remove and reinstall. 2. Your back stay is a nice stiff wire which can be fed up the mast as a messanger. Run the stay up the mast. tie the halyard to the end and pull through. If you know pop riveting, you don't need the rest of this. But you never know, so here it is. 3. Assuming now that at least one of the ends must come off to make this work, here's what you need. All Home Depot stuff. Drill and 3/16 bit. Small punch or nail Hammer Pop rivet gun 3/16 aluminum rivets (long) 4. Ok, you want to take a cap off. Identify the rivets holding it to the mast. They look like screws with no slot but a hole in the center. Drill through the hole in the center just a little bit and the head should come loose. Pull the head off and punch through the rivet body with the punch or nail. Repeat for the 2-4 rivets holding the cap on. pull the cap off. Go to no. 2. 5. To reinstall cap after the halyards and mast cap are in place, push fresh rivet into the holes and tighten with the gun per instructions supplied with rivet gun.

ps.......

Dave, Just looked your boat up and noticed that you don't have a backstay. Lashing 2 shrouds together will also work.

Try this

An electricians fish tape run it through the bottom and if you have been living right you can finesse it back out at the other end. Or a piece of chain about the diameter of a dogs lead will be enough weight to pull a piece of twine through after you raise the mast. (watch out for wires around the house) It is one of those things that is more of a pain in the ass than it is complicated. Have a stiff piece of wire ready to pull the tape or twine out when it gets to the other side.

Oh fun!

Dave; When running the snake, try to lean the mast down at a steep angle as this is the key to snaking through a mast. Also be warned that there are obstructions and you will have to try several times. good luck my friend. CRazy DAVEEEEEEEEEEEE

Lost halyard

Oh what fun. Been there, done that. So you have a dock party and invite a friend to climb mast or use bosuns chair. If you need new halyard get a kit and borrow a swage tool. It's really not that bad. Dropping the mast isn't really such a bad experience either. You'd be surprised at the people willing to help you out with a lot of know how. I hoisted up a too light prop for a decorated boat for "Opening Day" and got stuck in the same position. It was actually sort of a good experience.
