Missing Compression Tube?

The Hitachi Alternator on a Yanmar 3jh2 has a saddle mount. The engine only has a single ear in the front with a bolt that goes through both mounting holes on the alternator. Should there be a compression tube between the saddle mount? Without it, it might be possible over tighten the mounting bolt cracking the ears.

If there should be a compression tube, where could I buy one? Mine seems to have gone AWOL.

Not sure where you can buy one but it's just a steel tube that fits over the bolt. You should be able to fabricate one with a trip to the hardware store, a hacksaw, and a file. Note that if you do find the "official" part for sale, you may need to shorten it a bit anyway due to the ears having been bent towards each other.

IStream,

Will probably have to make on. Amazing how something that large can disappear in a small engine compartment. No doubt that it will magically reappear after I get everything put back together.

The "ears" should be in contact with the saddle. There should be a bushing in the aft ear. The bushing slides within the ear so as to take up any extra space. The mounting through bolt (head or nut) bears on the sliding bushing - not on the cast ear.

Charles,

Thank you. Your response helps to clarify my concern. There is a bushing in the aft ear and upon closer inspection the forward mount on the engine is more substantial than I had initially recalled. It may be that I hit the panic button sooner than was necessary, i.e., there may never have been a compression tube.
