When my husband and I purchased our 23 ft. 1975 O'day 2 years ago. It was a little beat up cosmetically (still needs a new wooden tiller,etc.)but nothing that affects handling/performance. What really bugs me is that the entire fabric liner inside has been ripped out at some point leaving old glue and bare fiberglass in the main cabin and v-berth. I just can't decide how to remedy this, and want something other than "RV" ugly carpet looking stuff. Does anyone know of a do it yourself way to add something classy such as wood that's not too technical or expensive to install? thanks, Mary AKA "first mate"

...past week or so said he cleaned the old stuff off and used an oil based 'Kilz' on it and it came out looking good. Go to the archives and key in headliner. You should find a lot on the subject. Jack

Hey Mary, I painted the inside of my 22 after removing most of the old rubber cement. I used Kilz Premium as it is cheap, resists mildex, staining, is durable, etc. This is a very quick and easy project, the Kilz mayb be overcoated in as little as 1 hour. I like the way that it came out and at around $8 a quart (which allowed for 3 coats) you can't beat it. Plus, it will form a good foundation if you ever decide to do something else to it. You may also buy replacement vinyl. I think Mike provided a link a week or so ago. I've also seen the pics of someone who covered the inside with cedar strips that were elevated from the hull slightly. It looked great, but would be a lot of money and time! Cheers,

what did you use on the cement?
i ended up installing ugly rv carpet because i couldn't find anything to remove the cement in such a tight, confined area that i felt confident wouldn't cause health problems. what did you use to remove the cement?

I don't really remember... probably acetone. I scrubbed with synthetic steel wool and plastic brush A LOT. I think that took most of it off. Anyway, congratulations on getting the project done, even if you think it's ugly.

My O'Day 26 was abandoned for 12 years before I bought her. She was full of mold, etc. and I tore out the liner. I sanded off the factory adhesive with 40 grit discs. Then washed off with alcohol after vacuuming. Sailrite has a fabric liner in 6 foot widths and the 3M spray to apply it.
