I just bought a 1989 30 88-94. I was doing my first pm when I noticed there was no air filter in the canister, just the metal cone shaped strainer. A closer inspection showed a black soot in the canister the throat and mounting plate. I wiped down area and attempted to change filter with one the previous owner had on stock. This one was crumbly it very easily fell apart. I think maybe its dried out or used but have nothing to compare it to. Furthermore I don't know if the other filter was like this one and disintegrated cousins that soot or never put in. is there a cleaner I can spray in the throat,My plan is to get a new filter i'm just concerned on what happen.

The "cone-shaped" filter is actually termed a "noise-supressor". It probably disintegrated and was ingested in the engine. Most likely no damage was done and the pieces were burned up in the process of the fuel burning. Actually, in the future, the noise supressor can be cleaned with a mild detergent/water solution. I am not aware of any spray cleaner that can be used, but a call to Yanmar or http://www.marinedieseldirect.com won't hurt, either to get thier recommendation.

Had the same problem with my Yanmar. I made a filter from vent filter material for house heat-a/c system. Seems to work fine. There isn't a lot of dirt in a boat application, unlike a car. But, it is important to protect the engine from dirt with the use of a filter.

I used to be a diesel mechanic and I have to say that the dirtier the engine, the more wear it gets. Solution....go get a sponge type filter at the boat store for about $2 and soak it with oil. Also coat the inside of the canister with oil. The dirt in the air will stick to the oil. Take out the filter and canister and wash them and re-coat twice a year. Thanks for reminding me I have to clean mine

The comment was that the diesel engine isn't the same as a car engine, but do remember, that there is always (and a lot of) belt dust in that environment.

My local auto parts store has a filter that fits my YSM12 air canister perfectly. $17.00 for part #6270. This is for land vehicles, there was no listing for marine engines.
