Misbehaving Depth Sounder

Help, Does anyone out there know how to discipline an ST 50 depth sounder that simply flashes any old number that is totally unrelated to the depth even when in shallow water. Sometimes I can get it to behave for short periods of time by first walking it through the Inital Calibration cycle. But it soon goes back to its misbehaving ways. Any ideas are welcome!!

Faulty sounder

My depth sounder was acting up and I noticed some condensation in the display unit. I pulled out the unit and had it bench tested which determined it to be ok. I dried the internals with a hair dryer on low heat, then resealed it, and it has been working fine for over a year now.

Malfunctioning depth sounder

I had the same problem to find out that my particular device was in a "simulation" mode. When I read the manual and determined the procedure to exit this mode, the depth finder began working fine.

Depth Sounder

I had the same problem with my depth sounder and went through the whole gamut of possibilities. First I tried adjusting the settings inside the sounder. Then I pulled the transducer and cleaned it thinking that it may be fouled. I sent the unit in to the manufacturer who was kind enough to bench test it and tell me that there was nothing wrong with the unit. They even sent me a new transducer to use in case the depth sounder still didn't work right. I replaced the old transducer and still it worked intermittently. Last season someone suggested a spray used by electronics technicians to clean and dry parts in assemblies like a depth sounder. He gave me a can of the stuff, I sprayed it into the back of the unit and the problem disappeared. I sprayed it into the works behind the knotmeter for good measure and everything works fine. The original source of the problem was a faulty gasket on the instrument face on the outside of the cabin bulkhead which allowed a small amount of water to leak into the depth sounder. I can't remember the name of the product, but I'll bet someone out there would know or you could go to some place like Radio Shack and find it.

Check the cable

Had a similar problem with our Datamarine unit a few weeks back. Problem was the coaxial cable leading to the transducer had chafed through the shield where it passed through a bulkhead. The center conductor was still intact. I spliced the shield together some added wire and taped over it with electrical tape. It has worked fine since. Jon Zaimes Airwaves ('80 Hunter 27)
