I'm having to work on my Mercury 7.5 and waiting for parts. In the meanwhile, I have a 50lb thrust Minn Kota that I just bought for my Tanzer 16. Anyone think the MK will work to get me out of the slip and into the channel?
I tried our 55lb Minn Kota on our C-22 a couple times. It worked to move along in calm water. It couldn't fight a current at all, and was pretty difficult to hold steady into a breeze. I'm pretty sure the battery I had at the time wasn't enough to maximize the electric OB's thrust; our current battery bank and thick cables might do a little better. But I still wouldn't expect a lot.
Yes, it should get you in and out of the slip in calm water and mellow winds. It would probably be optimistic to hope for much more than that.
I've used a 36lbs motor on a 19' boat on a few calm days on lake michigan. There was also a fellow at my marina that would take his Chrysler 22 out with a 24v trolling motor. I'm not sure how much thrust his motor had but it worked for a season before he got a 9.9
I took my Tanzer 16 out with the MK 55 and only needed the 3rd gear (out of 5) to move the little boat at a comfortable speed (perfect for trolling for fishing). It should do OK to get me out of the slip and back in.
