I'm installing a Nicro Mini Vent 1000 in the forward hatch of my H240. The directions indicate that the screws are not needed for this installation. The screws are only used for deck installations. It seems that this is held in place solely with 3m 5200. Am I missing something or is this that easy. Going to use a whole saw to get a nice clean cut. Also going to seal the cut with resing prior to installing vent.

Use screws and screw the 5200.

Sean: I would use the screws and use 4200 or a Lifecaulk type sealant. If you ever want to remove this and replace it you will probably remove some gel coat. There aren't very many things that I would ever use 5200 for and this is not one of them.

Screw Type for Nicro Vent in HATCH

Sean, Do NOT use the screws that Nicro furnished. They are only for deck installation. Do use SS MACHINE screws with nylon washers below along with SS nuts or cap nuts. A silicone or polysulfide sealant would be preferred but NOT the 5200 Polyurethane. I'm getting ready to install a Nicro 2000 Day-Nite Solar/Battery powered vent into the forward hatch of our H-33.5. 5200 is a kind of "industrial strength superglue"

It's certainly a lot easier to "glue" something together than drill holes and use screws and bedding compound...and it's ok for things you NEVER want to come apart again, but that's not true of most things, especially added equipment, on a boat. New owners have different ideas...new technology creates a desire for an upgrade...or something just wears out and needs replacing . Getting anything loose that you've cemented into place with 5200 is almost impossible without major effort and expense. So there's nothing wrong with 5200...it's a great product. But like most things, there are appropriate places to use it, and places that aren't.

Time to replace?

On my 1987 H23, the former owner had installed a Mini Vent. I'm guessing it's the Model 500 since it only appears to work when the sun is shining on it and I don't see any other electrical connection or battery. Last fall, when I put the boat away for hibernation, the vent worked. Sometimes, it would need a simple push on the blade for it to start spinning. Last week, when cleaning the boat, I noticed that it no longer works. You can spin the fan blade with your finger but the motor doesn't seem to kick in. Any one know what the life expectancy of these vents is? It's well past warranty time. I just wasn't looking for "one more thing to fix/replace" but it is a boat. Any other suggested attempts to resuscitate this one before I do a simple swap?

I Used the Screw Holes

I put #8 machine screws with fender washers and alot of goopy stuff in between the hatch and vent. It makes a world of difference.
