Mini bath

Hi all,

I was looking into buying a Hunter 36, then I saw a video with a mini bath in a Hunter 456, now for me this would be Ideal, what other models have this feature ?

Can the 456 in time be sailed single handed with an average fit guy?

I think I will get slammed on this because its a bit like how long is a piece of string, but how old is to old, I am buying my first boat in 35 years, I cannot afford a new one, but been looking at Benateu Oceanis, then I saw a Hunter 36 which is in my price range, but then saw this video on a Hunter 456 with a mini bath, now that was a Oh Yes moment, but I am not sure how old is old and not to bother with as it will be probably be to much work? or is there something similar?

Thanks
Dave

All my sailboats had a maxie bath off the stern. That and the sugar scoop shower......... Honestly I'm thinking this is a bit of a waste of space on a boat. It is not like you can stretch out in the thing for a long hot soak. How long does it take to fill that sucker and what kind of huge HW tank is needed.... more space needed for that. Course it would be a great place to do the laundry.
Good luck on your search

Unless you are a gymnast, good luck getting into that mini-tub. I know someone that has one, and they use it to give their dogs a bath. Really an enlarged shower sump, it's what - 10"x2'x3'?

With the non-overlapping headsail and both sails on furlers, it would be easy to single hand.

Hi Dave, our 1991 Passage 42 came equipped with a sit tub and a six gallon hot water tank. The Admiral enjoys the comfort of the tub as opposed to a shower, which the crew prefers. The 456 and P42 are very close in size to each other. I've solo sailed our 35,000 pound displacement boat thousands of miles all over PNW waters. As long as you do what she wants, much like the Admiral, she sails like a dream; stiff, fast and comfortable.

I wonder if anyone has tried making some sort of framework to hold a sheet of whatever fabric, and make a tub that way. Say, line the anchor locker maybe?

Terry, thanks for that I need to do more research, you have thrown a spanner in the works there, but a nice one :) Thanks, You say yours is a 1991, how many more years sailing do you expect to get out of it before you change to something else ???

Thanks Again
Dave

Hi Dave, you are most welcome. Purchased Belle-Vie in 2002 and will sail her until no longer physically able; ten years maybe. By then probably time to retire as opposed to down sizing. We'll see.

Some consider the P42 one of Hunters best built boats. Ours came equipped with an Onan 8kw Genset, dual heat pumps, etc. If you can find one in good condition, that might be the right choice for your admiral; it was the aft cabin that became the clincher for mine. Production years were 1990-1997.

How about just putting a plug in the cockpit drain and filling that? now that would be a big tub!

Dave, I vote with making the Admiral happy!

The Hunter 42 is a great boat, and easy to single hand.

If you get th boat you both like, it will take care of you as long as you want to or are able to sail. Our '77 h27 is just the right boat for the Admiral and me, and after 17 years, we would only upgrade if we wanted a furling main, and sugar scoop stern to make sailing easier when we are less able.

Lin and Larry Pardy had a tub instead of an engine on both of their world famous sailboats, and seemed to enjoy the tub a great deal. ( that's not a tradeoff most people would ever make, though.)

Whew! That would empty the hot water tank and water tank in a hurry.
I was told of a sailor who converted his cockpit to a hot tub occasionally, seriously, he rigged a heat exchanger to the engine, put a circulation pump to move the water through the exchanger to/from cockpit, I am told he is quite the party'r.

Hmm, nice idea. Hard to work on a P42 as the companionway hatch bottom is only about an inch or so above the cockpit deck.

You could do it. NNeed some heavy plastic sheeting. Like turning a pickup into a swimming pool. Just need to get a good seal and some support. Call me I'll help you test it.
