military surplus pur 35

i just aquired a military surplus pur 35, (now katadyn 35), manual watermaker. 1.3 gal/min hand cranked. seems to work quite well. my concerns are: i am hopefully gong to coastal sail the tex gulf coast, where the water isn't the clearest, in a year. i singlehand so don't see any problem keeping up with 1-2 gal day for minimal use. in your oppinion is this a suitable system for a small coastal boat, 1 person? how clean does the water have to be to start with? and, what contengencies should i make....parts kits, filters, membrane, etc?thanks,william

Fresh water only

I thought the Pur water filters were only to remove bacteria and stuff from fresh water. I don't think it will remove salt from salt water. Our BSA troop used one on a canoe trip in Boundary Waters, Ely MN. Stroking that little pump for about 4 min is more tiring than you think, and you only get 5 gallons!

Katadyn 35

This unit is rated at 1.2 Gl/hour. To make one gallon you will have to stroke that little bugger about 1800 times. If you are sailing the coast, I would take along water in flexible containers in case of emergencies and fill your tanks regularly. The 35 will be a comfort as a backup. Keep it in your "abandon ship" bag of goodies. Not all of the Texas coast is mud puddle!Good luck!Jon
