Oes anyone know of a list of all MWR marinas at military bases along the ICW or Atlantic coast? They are much cheaper & open to active & retired military. I did a Google search but each base has its own website - I was looking for a comprehensive list or map.

Thanks,

Like all things military, they probably have an aversion to having this level of detailed info and locations collected and publicly available to ANYONE on the web.

If it was that easy, Google would have found it for you. Since you got the list, but not in the form you'd like, looks like you'll have to make your own. Good luck. Since you have a sailboat (?) you can't go too far any given day, so what's the hurry? :):):)

I once did a search for military marinas here in the San Diego area and got a lot of hits. But I don't remember HOW I searched for it. I just tried again with different search criteria but did not get the list I once saw.

I would recommend contacting your closest military marina and ask if they have a list of the nearest military marinas. Better yet, visit if you live close by. Try the military marina Yacht club and see if they have a listing for reciprocal privileges. May be a long shot.

Couple of Suggestions

First

Check here:

http://militaryliving.com/

Their publications are usually very good.

Second

Being a member of a yacht club generally gets you one free night at a visiting club plus the use of facilities, pump out, washer dryer, showers, dining room, bar, etc... Not always and not all clubs but generally. We have travelled from Fort Walton to the Keys and not paid for a slip over the whole week the trip took us.

Years ago transiting the ICW I stayed at a Norfolk marina and another one in Pax River, MD. There is also one in Jacksonville, Fl. The military then was not averse to publishing that info... maybe things have changed. I would google the bases along the route and explore their websites. The MWR, Morale Welfare and Recreation offices of each base would have the best info.

Good question. Before I retired, my wife put in 26yrs USAF and I worked civil service at several Airman and Family Readiness Centers (Formerly Family Support). I use to keep a list of just about everything for incoming and outgoing airmen (PCSing). This is one question I was never asked. I do not know if there is actually a list. The best answer I can come up with is that you can search on this site http://www.militaryinstallations.dod.mil/pls/psgprod/f?p=MI:ENTRY:0 You select to search for MWR for the bases you find in your path and then call them. I know when we lived at Langley AFB, Va (Chesapeake Bay area) they had a marina. I also know that Mac-Dill AFB, FL (west coast) has a marina. This map will show ALL military bases, but you do have to click on each one separately. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zRnYK4gIPmV0.k7S4lNscTH6k&hl=en_US or http://militarybases.com/ Identify the bases in your track and then pull up the Phone # for MWR for that base using the first link above and call them to ask if they have a marina. I am not sure if Military One Source could help you or not. 800-342-9647 If you do find a list please post it.

Gotta correct this thought

Like all things military, they probably have an aversion to having this level of detailed info and locations collected and publicly available to ANYONE on the web.
Jackdaw, Sadly it is none of that, just plan bureaucratic incompetence.

For the original thread we have a marine on the Quantico Marine Base on the Potomac River and there is one up at Bolling AFB by DC but that one is so shallow only power boats dare to go there. On the Patuxent River there is also a MWR facility.

I like Stu's suggestion as more than practical, since you cannot move in a hurry on a sailboat just compile your own list by Google searching military installations perhaps a few hours or a day ahead of your route. I know the one in the Solomon Islands but you are a few days away from that one. Yes, because of security concerns I do not think they are listed nor advertised.

There Were Several in the Norfolk / Hampton Area

Is the one at Ft. Monroe still there? I know the base is closed I imagine they gave up the marina as well.

While we are at it how about a list of favorites?

Mine have been in no particular order and for different reasons:

Hickam
Roosevelt Roads
Tyndall
Kadena
Presidio
McDill
Pax River
Langley
Pensacola
Key West

There is a Military Marina in Norfolk at Joint Base Little Creek. It is a nice marina and generally has some transient space available but like most military marinas its hard to get a monthly slip. You'll need to call first and then before you enter the basin you have to radio (not sure of the channel right now) to get clearance to enter. Don't enter before you get the clearance and don't go the wrong direction inside the basin or a patrolling military small craft may "politely" redirect you. You can call them at (757) 462-7140. I stayed there for our trip from Annapolis down to Beaufort, SC and it a pretty big marina with decent facilities. They also have diesel available there.

If you google the name of the base you may be interested in you can probably find out if they have a marina by typing in something like "Joint Base Little Creek Marina." I think there is one in Jacksonville NC but I believe its far off the ICW and its pretty shallow at low tide. For the Navy anyway, it is normally part of the MWR (Morale, Wellfare, and Recreation) department on the base and if it is not I'm sure MWR can direct you the right way.

As was mentioned before, if you are a member of a Yacht Club somewhere along the ICW that is "friendly enough" to offer space available transient slips to other yacht club members you generally find that they will reciprocate. Its good to have a letter or some info indicating that you are a member of a club and they they allow space available transient stopovers. Its also a good idea to have a few extra club burgees from your club available as most clubs I've visited like to have a display somewhere. Not all clubs are this friendly, but you'll find that most are. There are a few "stuffy" clubs that consider themselves above this but I'd say many don't mind at all and even welcome you in with a drink or two.

In addition, you may want to check out some of the restaurants along the ICW that have docks. Give them a call and some will let you tie up for the night if you eat there (if there is space available). You won't have electrical hookup but then again you'll get a nice dinner with place to tie up without having to anchor out and use your dingy. Take your time and you'll have a pleasant trip. I know my wife and I enjoyed our transit down.

There are some Skipper Bob publications that are very useful and one of them is a guide with all kinds of info on Military Marina's on the Great Loop (which includes of course the ICW). Some of the info may be out of date but its a great start. Skipper Bob has sailed off into the sunset (God rest his soul) but I've found his publications to be very useful guides (not navigation info but chock full of good stuff like phone numbers, contact info, etc). Here is a link to the Skipper Bob site.

Go all the way to the bottom for the FREE Military Marina guide. You may want the Anchorage Guide too even if you don't plan to anchor on your trip. It give you some info in case you get stranded between marinas and need to drop the hook because you're getting ready to run out of daylight.

Patuxant navel air base. Hands down one of the best Marinas on the Chesapeake. They take good care of transients.

There is also an app called Base Directory that lists facilities and resources. There are only a few worth stopping at due to budget cuts and location. Some of them don’t take transients.

In Tidewater as mentioned, there are marinas at Langley AFB, Ft. Monroe, Naval Operations Base, and Little Creek. In North Carolina, check with Elizabeth City Coast Guard Station, Cherry Point (Hancock Marina) and New River Marine Corp. station. I would check with Ft. Macon Coast Guard station and Beaufort, SC MAC
