We purchased a custom mattress 2 years ago. This year I noticed 2 small spots of mildew on the outside quilting. This mildew is beginning to make a tear in the quilting. I have purchased a plastic zippered mattress cover but need to know how to get rid of the mildew if there is a way at all before protecting the mattress with the mildew resistant covers. Any help would be appreciated.

The LAST thing you need is a plastic cover

that seals in humidity...that'll only give mildew ideal conditions in which to breed. Fresh air and sunshine are mildew's worst enemies. If the stains are really set into the fabric cover, putting the mattress out in the sun for a day won't get rid of the stains, but it will kill the spores. To prevent more mildew, increase the ventilation inside the cabin...add fans, dorades etc. Leave drawers, lockers and interior hatches open so that plenty of air can circulate in and behind them.

Mattress Ventilator

I remember seeing an advertisement for a pad that goes under the mattress. The claim was that it promoted air circulation and kept the mattress "fresh". Of course, I can't remember the name of the product or where I saw the ad.

mattress ventilator products

I found these two products but have no idea how well they work. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has tried either one. One is called Dry Bunk and the other Hyper Vent. http://www.fisheriessupply.com/online/ln_menu/product.asp?mode=1&product_id=10428&hideprops=1&Ntt=mattress&N=0&Nty=1&R=3206&D=mattress&catalog_name=FISCO&Ntx=mode%2bmatchpartial%2brel%2bInactive&act=A01&Ns=P%5fSort&Ntk=All&sid=40BE6A001A3CE17F http://www.hyperventmarine.com/product.htm http://www.fisheriessupply.com/online/ln_menu/product.asp?mode=1&product_id=94012&hideprops=1&Ntt=mattress&N=0&Nty=1&R=25427&D=mattress&catalog_name=FISCO&Ntx=mode%2bmatchpartial%2brel%2bInactive&act=A01&Ns=P%5fSort&Ntk=All&sid=40BE6A0074E8E17F

Hypervent

I have used Hypervent over the last year. I spend a fair amount of time overnite and have always had moisture form under the forpeak matress. Since I started using this product, the results are amazing. Moisture free. It cost about $50 to cover the bow in my C30. I highly recommend. Sean

Another Happy HyperVent Customer

We installed HyperVent a couple years ago before going to SE Alaska where it rains a lot (and I'm from Washington so that's saying something) and can get quite humid. Our trip was 2.5 months and it worked great. Used the smooth side facing the matress and the rough side facing down. For really humid conditions I would suggest having a bit of HyperVent between the side of hull and the matress too. Might not look as pretty but it'll help the air flow. It can also be used in lockers and other places where air circulation against the hull is a problem and since it's relatively inexpensive that makes it easy to do. I don't know anything about Ventair or Drybunk so I can't compare. Hope this helps.
