Might just be the funniest question of all but I doubt it

Has anybody shrink wrapped their boat for the winter? I know, hilarious right? I just inherited 5 rolls 20" x 1000' of shrink wrap and thought, what the heck of I going to ever use this for. Then I looked at my boat an hour later and a light (a very dim light) popped into my head and pictured my boat shrink wrapped for the winter.

Don't have any pics of it, but in our marina, it's quite common for power boats to be shrink wrapped for the winter.

But boat wrap is special material, strong, wide, and UV resistant. 20 inch rolls will drive you crazy.

A different type of shrink wrap, but yeah. Here's our boat last winter

Some wrap, some have covers or tarps they reuse every winter. Some just leave 'er to the weather. I think this wrap job cost about $450.

Interesting. What does the keel sit on?
Good question. It looks like it might be resting on plywood, supported by the cradle cross members. We just bought this, our first, last fall and I never thought to look that closely. Here's a closer shot of the keel, with the lighting adjusted quite a bit so you can see it better.

Oh, don't let Jackdaw talk you out of a crazy great idea! ;) Go ahead an wrap it up this winter, but make sure you get a GoPro camera and record a time-lapse video of the process.

No sailboats shrink wrapped around here. We sail all year round rain or shine.

Lots of people shrink wrap but it has to be done properly.
We bought a Catalina 34 years ago that the PO had shrink wrapped. Not enough ventilation and when we bought her in the spring and unwrapped her there was mildew everywhere on he walls. Thankfully they'd taken the cushions home so they were spared. Spend days cleaning with stuff to kill and remove the mildew from the teak walls.

Swore I'd never use the stuff again. Had a custom canvas cover made. Big difference was that shrink wrap costs about $600 and lasts one year. Canvas cover cost $1200 and lasted 11 years.

jsg, you can't call the place Winterpeg in July after all.

Canvas cover might be just the ticket.

Most of the sailboats here, South of Boston are shrink-wrapped for the winter. Our marina charges about $800 to wrap our 33'. Watch out for awl grip paint if you have it. Shrink wrap will bond to it over the winter if it is in contact. Also, never try to install shrink wrap yourself in 15 knots of wind in the dark and cold when you are in a hurry. ...Don't ask.
