Me again :( My 29.5 did not come with any midhsip cleats and I am going to fit some ready for the hurricane season.... and because I reckon I want some. I am thinking of locating them near the chainplates, either for or aft. Question is, Is this location suitable? Can anyone advise what they did please? What width should the backing plates be as I am going to fit stainless steel formed plates to the back. I may also re-bed the deck cleats too as they just seem to have stainless steel washers for 'backing plates'. Hope you can help. Neil

Question

Neil, How do you plan to get access for installation of the backing plate? Will you be able to access it from the chainplate access? I was thinking of doing the same. Thanks, Chet

Ask Crazy Dave...

Dave did a fantastic job of installing a set of amidship cleats on my 27. Involved removing the headliner, installing a backerplate and putting the headliner back in.

I have mid ship cleats on my 29.5

Hi, I did not do it myself they came with the boat. I had to tighten them up and add a little sealant last summer. I was able to access the nuts from the inside without taking anything apart. It seems like a easy thing to drill and have large washers or a SS back plate made up for reinforcement. My boat is on the hard with lots of snow on it… I may not have access to it to take picture for you on the location and back plate but if you really need and want them, I could do it later for you as soon as the boat yard is accessible, 30 to 45 days.... How about a cleat mounted on your sail track

It mounts on your T-track, and can lock into any position where there is a hole on the track. Since the track already has enough backing support for your jib, it should be able to provide enough support for your midship cleat.

Mid Cleat

I added Mid Cleats On my 29.5 It was easy. Remove the chainplates access and you will have room to place the backing plates for the cleats. I called Hunter and Bought the Cleats and Backplates from them. It is worth doing. Having the mid cleats makes docking much easier.
