I just bought a beautiful 1989 Catalina 34. I want to install a microwave. Any ideas or information on doing this? Also, what kind if any would work best.

Smallest possible

Although the C34 is a nice roomy boat, you don't have room to waste. Most likely you'll be using your microwave for what everyone else uses theirs for: popcorn, heating water/coffee & reheating small portions of food. I'd take measurements of several different areas (cabinets, counterspace, etc) and then go to your local appliance store & find one that fits the size AND wattage capacity you want. I'm an electrical dummy so can't help ya there! LaDonna

Eric From my last reply to your earlier post on cockpit speakers you may have already discovered the tremendous amount of information on that link. Again, using the search engines, try microwave, you'll find lots of ideas. Stu

Low power, too...

If you ever decide that you want to use your microwave away from the dock you will need to run it thru an inverter. Small microwaves come in 600 watt and 1000 watt versions. Because of inefficiencies of the inverters (and the surge load of starting) a 1000 watt inverter will not power a 1000 watt microwave. If you get a 600 watt microwave you will be able to run it from a 1000 watt inverter (but not for too long). I would recommend having the engine running while the microwave is drawing power from the batteries so that the alternator is suppling most of the load. A 1000 watt microwave would run well with a 1800 watt (or larger) inverter. Again, use the motor to help when drawing that much juice from the batteries. So the smaller 600 watt microwave will be cheaper to buy and if you want to nuke popcorn at the anchorage it will be cheaper to add an inverter. Back at the slip the popcorn will take 5 minutes to cook versus 4 minutes with the more powerfull microwave - so what? You can buy a lot of popcorn with the money saved.

600 watt Microwave

I have a 2001 C36 and the factory installed Microwave is a 600 watt unit. I run it off a 1000 watt inverter and it works fine. Regards, Chris
