I have been told when it's time to add another coat of ablative paint the only surface prep necessary is a good power washing. No sanding necessary except areas where the existing paint may be flaked off down to the gel coat. I do have a couple of areas like that and plan to sand them. Has anyone used the power washing method without sanding and does it work as far as the new coat of paint adhearing to the old? Thanks for your input, Dave

Yep

That's all I've ever done. 'Course I'm up here in the largest freshwater lakes in the world and we don't get a lot of growth, but I gotta love a place called Frog Mortor Creek.

Interlux Web Site has Info

This spring I will be putting a coat of CPP over last year's coat of Mircon Plus. The Interlux web site suggests a light sanding before applying the new paint. If you have any areas that are down to the gel coat or barrier coat, it will require a bit more sanding to make sure the bottom paint will adhere properly. Go to the "Compatability Chart" on the attached link for more info.

Same here power wash the hull when the

boat is pulled in the fall and some very light sanding in the spring.. Until last year I use to use a brush and garden hose which took at least three hours.

Sorry, I disagree

If your paint is falling off leaving bare patches, that means it isn't adhering to the bottom. This comes from not prepping and cleaning the bottom properly last time. Many skippers make the mistake of painting over such problems only to continue to have the same thing. The bottoms of their boats look like the surface of the moon. Do yourself a favor, sand the bottom till it is uniformly smooth with 100 grit paper. Then wipe the surface down with acetone and lots and lots of clean rags. Now your surface is ready for painting. If you wet sand the finished paint with 220 paper, you will have a smooth clean bottom that will be much more hydrodynamic and efficient than an alligator skinned finish.
