I see that I need to carry insurance from a Mexican based company for my upcoming trip. Does anyone have opinions on who to use/not-use?

Are You Sure?

Here, I think most simply get an endorsement on their policy. My BUS policy covers 75 miles below the border. I know that automobile insurance through a Mexican domestic carrier is recommended even tho most US policies also cover 75 miles into Mexico. The problem is that the authorities will impound the car until financial responsibility is established if it is not a Mexican company. Something like that may be true for marine insurance too altho I have never heard of it. I do go to Mexico at least annually.

Probably the best thing to do is ask your present insurer what they know.

May want to check on you life policy too.

This happened yesterday, after his commander ordered his men not to go across the border. Of course it depends where you are going and how lucky you feel.

I live in Texas and have no desire to set foot over there.

I see that I need to carry insurance from a Mexican based company for my upcoming trip. Does anyone have opinions on who to use/not-use?

Check the Travel Warnings in effect from the US State Deparment. There are drug wars going on down there among the cartels and between them and the goverment. They are characterized by extreme violence and killings. Although most tourist places are relatively safe they are not immune. A good number of US expatriates were surprised one morning when it became known that a sought after cartel leader was found to be living in their high end aparment complex. It shocked them to realize that a gun battle could have easily developed near their homes. I have friends that know Mexico very well and they will not go down until the situation improves.

The key is that Mexico operates under Napoleanic Law.

That and a heavy dose of "laissez faire" which is a legacy left over from the French when they took over the country 150 years ago. Forget "innocent until proven guilty" that is English law. In Mexico you can pretty much do as you like until you injure someone or something. Then you will have to make it right ... right then. The marinas and authorities will only recognize a Mexican insurance carrier. If you can't produce a policy that they can read and understand from a company they are familiar with, you will be held until you pay the full cost of repairs or remedy. This is not about "hull replacement value". This is about keeping you out of custody. If you are ever arrested for any reason, it is assumed you are guilty and 100% your responsibility to prove otherwise.

Dave,

I understand about Napoleanic law. I've spent many years in Central and South America where that's the standard law practice. I'm simply asking for insurance company recommendations or ones to keep away from.

I don't need lectures on legal systems or the drug wars. Most people sit at home and justify their fears by repeating the horror stories that are blown out of proportion on the news. I try to be prudent, plan, and live the life I want to. It's not for everyone, but so far I've been safe by trusting my instincts.

most all mexican marinas will require a copy of your mex liability policy to allow you use of their facilities.its mexican law not US.they don't care if you have comprehensive or collision, thats between you and your bank.Almost all mexican insurance companies are acatully US companies.the largest three are GMAC, GE, and ACE.. an annual liability policy for one year will cost about 100-125$ regaurdless of boat size.google san carlos mexico and their is an online menu where you can purchase your insurance and print it out. also don't forget you have to have a ten year temporary import permit for your boat which can also be purchased online but is fed-exed from mexico city so takes two days to be delivered after purchasing.for those who here the state department warnings about drug wars thats limited to the large border cities only and only if your dabbling in buying weed from the cartel. i reccomend buying US grown weed for patriotic reasons if you have to have it.for the one millon plus US citizens who are semi-permenant residents owning property, houses, and boats in mexico just on the gulf of calif. coasts I can tell you once your 2-3 miles past the border the worry of being a crime victim is less than that of driving in LA Phoenix or San Diego
