Messabout?

Ever heard of the phrase? The site would be considered a "messabout" I think. I was Googling for the quote about messing about in boats to get it right and this wiki came up

A messabout is an event where a group of people get together to discuss and "mess about" in boats. The concept is not new but the name is. The term originated in April 1990 when Joe Tribulato organized the first such event with this name. This was the beginning of the Southern California Small Boat Messabout Society, SCSBMS.

The term is derived from the children's book "The Wind in the Willows", by Kenneth Grahame. In the story, Mole and Rat are rowing up the river in Rat's boat. They are discussing nautical things and life in general when Rat is heard to utter,

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing... about in boats — or with boats. In or out of ’em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not.

There are several. There used to be a "messabout" here at Magnolia Beach , sponsored by Duckworks . Then Chuck started the Texas 200, and that ended the messabouts.

There's one that happens every year in North Carolina, at the B and B yacht design dock, for Graham's designs.

Also one happens at Cedar Key in Florida each year, hosted by the WCTTS- West Coast Trailer Sailors

Several more happen here and there annually - lots of fun

Great post. This will help me explain to the Admiral why I need to go to the boat frequently to “mess about” and also hang out with the other “messabouters” at the marina.

I need a regular dose of Messabout. I’m trying to get a doctors subscription.

The other day my wife was telling some friends that now both of us are retired she suggests that I go to the boat for a messabout on a regular basis. Gets me out of her hair.

I think this is ok.

My wife is the same way. She recognizes that a messabout is a good stress reliever for me.

Self medicating in this case is a good thing. Glad I have a boat to go to and messabout while retired. My better half is glad to, except when I come in with new debit receipts for what I bought today.

I know it is good for me. I’m thinking she also finds it good for her. I never knew I could be annoying. I always thought of myself as lovable. Like a favorite teddy bear.

There is just something about being able to get to the boat that is calming in itself.
I had my knee replaced 4 weeks ago and the two biggest incentives for working hard through the physical therapy are the ability to get around safely on the boat, and to get into and out of my Corvette.

No one who knows you would think otherwise.
