my throttle cable came loose inside the merriman brand pedestal. i have removed compass, and next tier to expose steering chain and gear but can't find the anchor that held the cable. do i need to remove the whole pedestal from the deck to recover lost parts? also my boat didnt come with a wheel brake, but does have a hole in the right side of the pedestal. anyone know if you can get parts for merriman pedestal? my boat is an '86 28.5. thanks all. jon, Hotel California

Look in the aft berth, sometimes there is a panel you can take off. I have a phone number of a company that makes the housing that holds the throttle and clutch assemblys. Let me know if I can help

Wheel Brake

From what I've seen on my '86 28.5, Rick is right. There is an access panel below the pedestal with four screws holding it to the overhead in the quarter berth. If anything dropped down it should be on the top of that panel or accessible with the panel removed. You will not need to (or want to) remove the pedestal. The wheel brake should be reasonably easy to install with the compass removed. Take the time to check out and lubricate the steering chains while everything is opened up.

merriman pedestal

thanx rick. i did find that panel, actually a friend of mine named merriman (believe it or not), found the aft panel. i should have read the archives. seems i'm not the only one with this pedestal problem, or looking for a wheel brake. think i'll order a wheel brake from the chandelry. i think iknow why my throttle cable came loose now. i was devising my own wheel brake and loosened the screw on the front of the pedestal to install my home made brake and the clamp fell inside. i'll see if i can fish it out this weekend. thanx again... jon

thanx for the reply, what is a good lube to use on the wheel chain?

Telephone Number?

Do you mean the part of the assembly that holds the shift and throttle assembly? If so, perhaps you can post it here or maybe Phil can start carrying them in the store like he does the wheel brake. Thanks.

Winch Lubricant for steering chain

Jon, If I remember, I was wondering that too and happened to have some winch lubricant aboard, which is probably just white lithium grease. I used very little so it stayed on the chain and sprocket.

Chain lubticant note

Grease on the chain will lubricate only the portion of the chain you can see. Chain is made up of lots or pins and bearings. If this was a high speed application like a motorcycle I would recomend a foam spray on chain lube. They go on as a thin liquid and work their way into the pins and bearings and then thicken up into grease which won't fling off. Adequate would be light oil or spray lube, NOT WD-40 which is a cleaner. My personal favorite is LPS 2 which I find at the local Ace hardware -- very expensive, so in must be good.

thanx for all the replies and good advice. i ended up removing the pedestal to find my lost throttle cable clamp that was attached originally to the screw on the aftside of the pedestal. i notched a stick to fit the clamp in to extend it down the pedestal to start the screw thru it. it was an agonizing, tedious job but was successful. the throttle works again, my steering is lubed, ( i used white lithium grease, hope that's ok), and i was able to get back on the lake and sail sunday eve. after being out of commission for 2 weekends. i have ordered a wheel brake from the chandlery also. thanx all! jon
