Would anyone haver or know where to locate a diagram for the Merriman Holbrook 20 Winch. I guess the have been defunct for 20 years or so. I think they are original equipment, and one of mine seems like its frozen. I am looking to disassemble, clean, repack and hopefully use it for another 30 years.

Just do it.

Just take it apart and lay it out on some clean white shop towels Bob. I have an old 2-speed Barient in that state right now. There really isn't much to the internals of a winch. The first step might not be obvious. My Lewmars have little allen bolts but this Barient has those thin snap rings. The main issue is to sketch how the pawls and springs are inserted. Those have to go back in exactly right. Likely you will find the springs in the pawls have weakened or broken. I have that situation right now. I will see what I can find in the Lowes/Home Depot miscellaneous drawers. I am sure I can make a couple. Not sure what you can do if the gears are shot. Probably replace it. I paid $60. for this Barient 22. Not self-tailing but otherwise an excellent winch. I have one of those bicycle parts cleaning tubs filled with mineral spirits. It was ideal for cleaning away all the old grease.

Winches

I have to top off, and the pawls and springs (although dirty and a lot of dried grease) look intact. I also took the bottom snap ring off, yet another set of gears and pawls in the same condition. The top and bottom don't want to seperate, and thats where the problem lies (I think). I may just soak it in a bucket of kerosene or solvent and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

Merriman Winches -- Hey Ed!!1

I just did it!!!! I had to beat the top an botton apart with two blocks of wood and a hammer, but it finally seperated. Corrosion was the culprit. About an hour and a half with crocus cloth and its shiny brite inside, and enough has grease to keep it spinning for another year. I guess winch maintenance was not a big concern for the PO. I don't think it had been grease in 10 years. The barinet 23's were a breeze compared to the smaller one.

Glad to hear it!

There is something to that old adage, "you need a bigger hammer". Glad to hear that you saved another piece of history.
