among those A/C sold by West Marine , or other major brands, is indeed Mermaid-as advertised- quiter than the others..? Is indeed her 'rotary' compressor better, long lasting, free of problems than the others ? I am thinking about a 12000 BTU self contained unit . Thanks for advice ,

Paper Analysis Indicates Mermaid A/C is Best

I am getting ready to procure and install a 16,500 BTU reverse cycle (actually listed as 18,000 BTU for heat) for my Hunter 340. My paper analysis indicates that the Mermaid unit is less money, slightly smaller, and made out stainless steel base. If you need reverse cycle buy it out of Defender (14,000 BTU $1153, 18,000 BTU $1345) and both need an installation kit for $263. Don't buy a Crusiair - too loud and too cheaply built. The Marine is a good unit, but I needed the slightly smaller size and saving some money helps.

Mermaid

I bought the Mermaid because of the price and the warranty. I bought the 16,500 btu and mounted it below the port side setee. It is quite and have had no problems since installed two years ago. I bought it direct from Mermaid, they have a website and an 800 number. Installed it my self it works great and this time of the year cools the entire boat with out running my other unit.

Defender

I bought my Mermaid thru Defender, I paid a bit less, but the installation kit that was included lacked parts I needed, had to buy from Mermaid direct, ended up spending the same amount. If to do again, I would buy direct, great customer service.

Mermaid Air

I installed a Mermaid Air 16,000 reverse cycle in my '86 Hunter 34 and am pleased with the heat output. Waiting on summer to use the ac.

Mermaid A/C

I bought the Mermaid because of size considerations. It is about as quiet as other units, and the service from the factory has been excellent. Joe
