Mercury outboard extended warranty

Hey everyone,

Exactly a year ago I bought a Mercury 5hp propane sail drive motor. So naturally i got the extended warranty package in the mail last week.

I don’t usually go in for the extended warranty, but the price is not bad, it’s like $60 per year. Basically it starts out with a 3 year warranty, so, until 8-1-23. Adding a year would push it to ‘24. For $190 or something I can push it until 2028. I can’t imagine I’m going to go through $60 / year of repairs on a new motor, especially given that I’ll use it a couple hours per year total.

What I’m wondering is if anyone has experience, as a mechanic or as an owner, with these engines or these warranties, and what you would recommend.

BTW: small Mercury engines are made by Tohatsu. Not sure why it matters, but I know someone will mention it if I don’t.

From my experience with automotive warranties it's usually best to have a shop do maintenance work so you have a paper trail in case something happens

My two cents:
  • Good for you to purchase an extended warranty!! ...........I have 6 year exteded warranties with $0-100 deductible on several items: 2016 truck, 2020 fifth wheel and 1974 home
