My out board went kaputz. The engine idles fine but it does not move the boat, forward or reverse. One guy looked at it and said to bring to a mercury dealership. Another guys says he will look at but will probably big be $$$ and may just wanna buy a new one, and Not a mercury. I have all the remote get-ups for this mer and would just another one like. BUT, can't it be fixed? 1st guy said probably the gear housing. Why is 2nd guy saying it is basically shot??? Thanks!!!!!

Why?

Some people like them, some don't. I would take it to a dealer to look at it and give you an estimate. If it's cheaper than buying a new one, and he warrants his work, then it's a no-brainer to have it fixed. Especially if you like it and have all the controls for it. Hint: I had a Merc once and the prop sheared and would free-spin while the prop stayed still. Shut the engine off and try to give it a free-spin while it's in gear. If it spins with no resistance, then all you have to do is change the prop. A pro should tell you that. It may be time for a tune-up, anyway. The hub on the prop wears and will give away after a certain age.

this may be obvious but are you sure the shear pin is ok and the prop is seated correctly on it?
