I just got a smoking deal on a brand new 2010 Mercury 4 stroke 4hp long shaft motor from a local dealer. Total price at $ 975. New, never started.

Most of my sailing is done on small inland lake with occasional trip to larger inland lake. I have been using an older 6hp Sailmaster.

Will the new Merc 4hp keep up with older Sailmaster motor or will it at least be enough to keep me happy?

Thanks to everyone in advance.

We have a Honda 5hp 4 stroke that replaced a 6hp 2 stroke. I think you will find that your new 4 hp motor will be just fine. Your are going to like the lower noise and no smell of the 4 stroke. They also sip gas. Congrats on the new motor.

That's quite the deal! Cheaper than aTohatsu,(who actually made the motor). I had a 6 HP Nissan,(also made by Tohatsu), on my Capri, and now we have a Honda 5 HP on our C-22. I believe the Tohatsu made engine is smoother running, and quieter than my Honda, and cheaper and easier to install the charging kit on. I sure like the way the 4-strokes sip fuel!

Your fuel consumption will be reduced by 50% and that engine should push the boat to almost hull speed if the bottom is clean. Nice score.

AFter I used new 4 stroke 4 hp mercury, I can say it works great and pushes the Cat 22 as fast as I need to go even against serious wind and waves. I'm very happy and very glad it is a long shaft.

Thanks to all
