I have a 1987 Merc 9.8 long shaft. The Water pickup is different than any I have owned in the past. The water pick up in located in the bottom of the cavation plate. HOW do I flush this? the normal Engine muffs /ears would not work.. I'll call Mercury tomorrow, but other than a large trash can... any ideas?

bucket?

Hello, Wouldn't a 5 gallon bucket work? I built a stand for my Nissan 5 hp motor out of some scrap 2 X 4. The stand is basically an upside down "T". It works great for holding the motor when off the boat, and I can stick a 5 gallon bucket under it for flushing. Barry

A great ebay gadget

I bought a great little gadget on ebay for engine flushing for about 10 bucks. It was a coupling that hooked to the pee-hole at the bottom of the cowling. Whenever you wanted to flush you hooked the hose to it. Unfortunately, I sold that boat and motor and need a new one, but it was made of quick-disconnect fittings you could buy at any Lowes/Home Depot yard department and a small water line clamp. The hose end was the male of the quick disconnect and the female part was sticking out of the bottom of the cowling. If I put is together I'll take a pic and post it. I'm sure the guy still sell them on ebay (emotors) IJ PS, I found it and he still sells 'em. 15 bucks. Here's a link.

Flush connection

We have a 6 HP Merc. that uses the same kind of "under-the-cavitation-plate pickup." I bought a small hose coupling which screws into a small screw fitting under the lower side of the engine. Cost was around $15. The owner's manual describes this as the preferred way to flush the engine with fresh water. Most any dealer who sells small outboards should have the fitting. Gary

I Have the Same Yellow one

I wonder if I paid $60 for it? Seems outrageously over priced. The only problem with it is with the hose coming straight out the bottom you must remove the prop to use it. I pulled the hose connector off replaced it with a 90 degree connector and put a hose connection on the other end and had no problem using it after that.

outboard flusher additive

Has anyone used an additive such as CLR (calcium, lime, rust remover) when flushing their outboard while its' in a garbage can/ large bucket? Just curious to see if there's any recommended product to add to the flush water that would aid in removing the salt buildup. thanks

Gary is right

This fitting is also available at West Marine, that is where I bought mine. It is a merc part in the engine accessory section. It screws into the bottom of the block under the cowling ,it appears to be about 1/4 " dia. bolt but I think it is a metric thread. The Owners manual I believe states not to run the engine. West Marine also sells a product to flush with that works well ,"Salt Away". It also is available with an attachment to the garden hose to dispense.

Merc Flushing

The Mercs have this great screw in fitting that has previously been described. You do NOT have to run the engine when flushing. It screws into the starboard side of the engine just under the cowling. You have to remove a screw plug, screw in the fitting which has a simple hose connection, turn on the water, flush, remove and rescrew in the plug. That's of course, if you have that plug and connection on your engine. Should be able to get one from the Merc dealer. Ours was a brass color. Stu
