Wonderful Weekend!

We had a great weekend aboard DreamBoat. After some last minute repairs, and a new bottom-paint job, we left Beachcomber Marina at Dog River about 3:30PM on Friday, and motor-sailed back home to the mouth of Fowl River. Saturday morning, we got the boat cleaned up and provisioned, and headed south for Dauphin Island. We planned to meet up with my brother and his family at their new beach house. We arrived at Dauphin Island about an hour before dark, but could not find the unmarked channel in to his house, so we had to anchor out. It was not a restful night, with south-southwest winds about 10 to 15, seemingly constant boat traffic, light chop, odd boat noises and worry about a dragging anchor. Saturday morning we went around Fort Gaines and out into the Gulf. After we negotiated the ship channel and Dixey Bar, the Gulf was beautiful. Southeast winds at 10 - 15, blue-green water, 4 foot swells, just about perfect. We eventually turned around, passed Fort Morgan, and headed for Bon Secour River. About halfway across the bay, a thunderstorm popped up, and things got exciting! Lightning was flashing all around us, the wind picked up to 30 - 40, and the raindrops felt like bullets. We furled all sails and motored into the intercaostal waterway to hide. Found an empty dock and tied up to wait for the storm to blow over. After about another hour of wind and rain, things settled down and we motored back into Bon Secour River and anchored behind Plash Island. This was a much more restful night, with gentle breezes and calm water. On Monday morning we set out for home, and when we poked back out into Mobile Bay, we were greeted with southeast winds at about 15 - 20, which allowed us to sail wing-and-wing all the way home, 22 miles in just over 4 hours. We are lucky to live in such as beautiful area, with good sailing and other water sports available nearly year-round. And yes, we are lucky to live in a country where all this is possible. I have family members that have served and are serving in our military, and I had family members that gave their lives for our freedoms. I remember that every day! It's a shame that Memorial Day has been turned into the long weekend that kicks off the summer season. Much more emphasis needs to placed on the original meaning of the holiday.

Beautiful day

While I didn't sail on monday I did on sunday(not much wind but still beautiful). I still tried to take a minute to think of some of our country's veterans: my dad-gone 10 years now - a former marine gunnery sgt in WWII; Older uncles that had served(one of them chasing that darn 'messican'Pancho Villa)Guys I knew from HS that didn't make it back from 'Nam.. Memorial day took on a new meaning this year as the plumber handed me his bill from some emergency work - I guess I'll have to REMEMBER what it was like to have money in my pocket now! The actual 'calendar' Memorial day I'll be helping out in a community child ID program for my lodge.

Nice weekend, finally!

We've been so cold and wet up to this point, 3 days of sun meant ... sunburn! We finally re-named our boat this weekend. We are now known as S/V THUNDERBIRD! After a few seasons without a name, it feels great! We sailed on Saturday in strong winds, Sunday (winds were on and off) and motored out to anchor for a little while yesterday, even though the wind was excellent. I thought about swimming until I climbed down the latter about knee high in the water. I normally just dive in but water temp is still only 60 (cold for this time of year) so I thought again. We watched the other Lake Hopatcong Scott ON EAGLES WINGS go sailing by just as we were motoring in. We had a few family obligations. A new observation for this season ... lots of one design racing on our lake. It seems that the new HO scows now have an extendable bowsprit for setting the spinnaker. I haven't noticed them before. That must give quite the advantage to the new boat owners! I didn't have our camera or I would have taken a photo. Next weekend, I'll be prepared.

Great Weekend on the Texas Coast

Franklin had been testing out his new sails and new cruising spinnaker in Galveston Bay but needed a really good sea trial and shakedown before his Galveston to Vera Cruz race in 2 weeks. We took his 375 Hunter 4 Hours down Galv. Bay and then about 45 miles of open Gulf to Freeport, Tx. Spent a day in Freeport and then back to kemah, Tx. It was great sailing weather both directions. Mostly 16 to 22 knots with all points of sail. Mostly reaching and broad reaching in the Gulf. With the cruising spinaker, we hit 8.8 knots for a few minutes. Averaged 6.8 to 7.3 without the cruising chute. It was a great sailing trip. The entire trip (other than getting in and out of the marinas)we motored 1 mile in Galveston ship channel, and about 2 miles total in Freeport getting out of marina and out of the gettys with a head wind. Great trip. Tony B

The freaky weather in So Cal

made us scrap our plans. This was the fourth time since March that we've had to cancel a trip due to weather. But, we went to plan B, which was the wife doing gardening and me going for several motorcycle rides over the four days. (I had taken a vacation day on Friday) On Monday, went out for a daysail. The day started with dark, threatening clouds, but they went off to bother someone else and the day turned very nice, with a 15 kt westerly. Great sailing for awhile. It was clear, but cold, for So Cal

combined sailing and remembering

what Memorial Day is all about. I am a teacher/editor and brought my veteran's rememberance seies on the boat. Got some sailing and editing done. The project is for the Library of Congress in an effort to record the oral histories of our fast disappearing WW II vet's. For the last year I have been gathering stories from the men and women in our county for inclusion in the project. We will be recording vet's from all war's eventually. It is a great project. If you get a chance to participate jump on it.

Live, love, life

I along with 4 friends and our famlies all met up at Crab Island (Destin Fl) for fun and frolic. The 5 of us are all retired Military, with over 100 years combined service. Trust me when I say that all our brothers and sisters who gave their all for this great Country would want is for each of us to enjoy life to the fullest, and a little prayer, for those that are inclined, wouldn't hurt either.

Work, work, work

is all we did from Friday afternoon until Monday afternoon. The weather for Lake Superior for this time of year wasn't bad (mostly sunny, temps in the high 50's)until late Monday morning when the sky clouded up and rain came down. The temp plunged from 57 degrees to 39 degrees in about 45 minutes. We finished up some work inside the boat but we realized even the heater could not keep us warm so we bagged it. We like to get all the work out of the way this weekend so we can sail the rest! I am ashamed to admit it but I was so caught up in my own pursuits I did not take the time to remember those who have served our country. Both my Father and Father In Law (both deceased) served in WWII and I will always be grateful to them.

On the Central Chesapeake bay

I was able to squeeze in a short sail Sunday. My nephew graduated from the Univ of MD and I had to attend the must attend party on Saturday. My daughter flew in and opf course made reservations to fly out on Sunday afternoon, so that left just Sunday morning. But those few hours were GREAT! One interesting tidbit. I think there were far fewer powerboats out. With gas up in the $4.00 range and even higher for deisel it is costly for the speed boats to run around. That makes for better sailing. I spoke with a friend with a new 49' big power hog and he was saying his new boat burns 30 gallons an hour! You figure that is about $120-$150 an hour! That would change my mind as to how often I went out for an afternnoon and run an hour over to a special restruant and have dinner and then back all for $300 PLUS dinner! Gotta have deep pockets for that kind of fun. Me, I will stick to my rag setter and enjopy the peace and quite this summer on The Bay.

Got up to NY Saturday and did the BBQ thing with family all week end. Now it's time to get the boat ready for a great sailing season, all the other boats are in their slips already, the crazy rush is over and I have the yard all to myself. Nick
