Melted wires! Electrical Short.

Hello everyone, Last night when I hooked up my battery to my main neg and pos wires, I was not for sure if I hooked them up correctly or if I got them crossed. It was pitch black. Part of me thinks I could have just had a short. All at once, many of my wires just melted and created more smoke that you could imagine from all that plastic melting all at once. I think I ruined about 8 or so wires. Most of them I replaced so far. It seems that everything works no. What do you think happened. What could have caused this. I was thinking about it and don't think that hooking the ground to the possitive terminal would have done this. Or would it? The previous owner did not do the best job in the electrical area. I could see many wires that were spliced into and just taped. There were wires that were exposed too in some places. I am at a loss. All and all, I figured out that I only destroyed the Volt Meter on the boat. I can get a replacement at Auto Zone for 12 bucks or so. I just don't want this happening again. Here is my worry. If it was a cross in the wires some place, where can a cross such as this occure. When it comes to electrical, I know enough to wire my home. (I have done this) But there is still a lot that I can learn in this area. Thankx for any info you can provide me! Your Friend, Skip

just be careful

Be careful. Count at least 72 hours from smoke to see if you have any lingering effects of smoke. Those chemicals' toxicity can take that long to work. Regarding the wires, do a thorough check of all your systems, use a 'systems approach' for all electrics. Don't try to do it all in one day, unless all you do is assess, not repair. Good luck, Joe

Very Strange...Wires Melted ...Did not blow a fuse

Hi Joe, Your right. I better take this one slow. I am going to rewire the entire boat just to be sure. I will put in all new wires and ends and I will solder it all together with heat shrink tubing. good thing there are really nice fuse boxes and stuff already there. But there is no main fuse for the system. No fuses blew????? I found that the wires before the fuse box were the ones that meleted. Very strange! Skip

I think I figured this one out..Cross in the wires

I have the Hunter 27...1979. I don't know if there is an upgrade or not but figure that if it is just electrical, I am sure I could take care of this. I'll start with all the runs. I was lucky and non of the major wire bundles were effected nor were any of my electronics...Speed, depth, wind, etc. If it would help, I can actually snap a photo of the fuse panel I have. There are about 6 switches. But to the engine, there are no fuses. There was obviously a cross now that I look at the problem more closely. Two of the wires, one ground and one power were welded together. Skip
