Medical problem

Fair winds and following seas - but rather too much of both - after leaving Neah Bay on September 29. We made for deep water 100 miles offshore and caught the strong northerlies down the coast. The wind and seas continued building and after three days it began to get a bit too exciting. On the evening of the sixth day Laura had a severe asthma attack so Chuck had to stand watch and watch. By the seventh day Laura's breathing had not improved and we decided to make for the closest port of refuge at Crescent City, CA.

The wind clocked around and headed us from due south so we started the engine and pounded into it for thirty hours, reaching Crescent City Harbor at 22:00 on October 7th. On the morning of the 8th we took Laura to the clinic and checked in to a motel on Hwy 101 across from the harbor. Laura is currently under "house arrest" under orders to get bed rest and we expect to be here for at least 7-10 days, while chuck is unloading the boat and washing everything.

We've decided to keep closer in shore for the rest of the trip to San Diego and hope to be there in the next two weeks. (Weather permitting, of course) For the time being, the weather forecast is for southerly winds to 25 knots so it would be pointless for us to put to sea anyway. Another boat that departed Neah Bay the same day as us is also here waiting for favorable winds.

This trip is getting to be less fun than we had planned.

Chuck and Laura,
Sorry to hear your trip continues to be a bit of trial. Hopefully when the
winds shift around, you'll be able to make a quick run down the coast to the San
Diego sunshine.
All the best,
Howard and Sheila

Hi Chuck and Laura,

Hope the asthma is getting better, and we are glad you guys made it to port in
good time.

I found that using a fungicide (i dont remember the name) improves my breading
condition and delays the growth of mould for upto 6 months, maybe you can try
this is you have not used it before.

Best of luck.________________________________

The coasts of Washington and Oregon are known to be tough, with few places to tuck into, and Cape Mendocino has a reputation as a bear. They serve as something of a barrier to us lesser soles down here (down wind and down current). I think as you get further down the coast you will find the weather will be warmer and probably more predictable.

Chuck,
How long are you and Laura planning on spending in San Diego once you get there? If you are going to be there at least over a weekend, maybe we can get together for coffee or something. I live about 90 miles from San Diego, but would be willing to drive down to meet you two and see your boat. Mine is still at least a year away from going back in the water (hasn't been in the water since I bought it, as well as 10 years before that) and I would love to see how you outfitted it. Hopefully, Laura will recover quickly and the rest of your trip down will be uneventfull.

Laura is feeling better now so we expect to be leaving as soon as we can fully recover the boat and get everything clean and dried out, and as weather permits (Still small craft advisories today for hazardous seas and winds to 30 knots off Point St. Georges)

We expect to stay in San Diego for a few days at least and would love to meet up. We will post here when ever possible.

BTW, Mahalo nui to Walt and Judy Brown here in Crescent City for all their help and hospitality.
