I am part of a crew that is taking a cruise from here to Panama and back. We have six different legs and some changeouts of crew along the way. One of the issues we were discussing was medevac and traveling health insurance. A couple of the outfits that sell policies offer coverage for 45 days or so for a little less than $200 seems cheap for the potential circumstances. Anyone out there have experience with this or recomendations?

I would ask every crew member to have a complete

physical before such a venture. Make certain all of the immunizations were up to date and check to see if blanket medivac insurance was available for the entire voyage.

might try Divers Alert Network

Also known as DAN. They have an insurance program for, primarily, scuba diving related injuries but it includes a medical evacuation assistance plan that, as I recall, covers medical transportation home for any medical emergency. Its not health insurance but its a reasonable price. I think $25 for the basic membership gets you the evacuation assistance coverage.

I had the pleasure (at times) to crew on a 42 ft yawl with 3 others, from Malta to Panama. I went to the company that supplies our house insurance and they got me a medivac policy for one dollar per day. fortunately it was not needed although I did want off on occasion.
