Joe, you guys crack me up!

I spent about 1 hour tactfully trying to type a reply including Barbarella as a sequal. I finally deleted it and looked and there is your zzzzzzzz, post. Guys, I am educated. I am not looking for a masters in filters, I want to know why mine doesn't work!:) I can't wait until we complain about too much wind or not enough...... It won't be long. r.w.landau

heh, heh....

...that's funny. Sorry I couldn't help myself with that little nudge. Both you guys are such knowledgeable and highly respected contributors here, it was inevitable that you'd find something to butt heads on. Nothing more interesting than a couple of engineers in a pissing contest.

nothing more dangerous

or counter-productive than two engineers (or engineer wanna-be's) trying to figure out the same problem. It's lucky no one gets hurt.

Take it or leave it......

If you asked on a professional basis and contracted me (or Maine) you'd receive a whopping bill at standard rates, and you'd be very happy with the result. That I or others 'care' to take the time and freely GIVE you such answers based on 'current state of the art' information .... and then you overtly reject it or trivialize the freely given result ........ well then, you can simply expect no such free and correct info in the future. And you can simply PAY for that data/info ... your choice.

Well said Rich..

I like to see folks be able to afford to do something they love such as sailing. This is my only reason for sharing my earned and learned knowledge. I get no "personal benefit" from sharing my knowledge or experiences other than helping to keep the sport of sailing hopefully more affordable for others as I believe anyone with the smarts to own a boat, also has the smarts and capability to fix their boat, and save money in doing so. Some here have pointed out that I don't even use my "real" name. I can assure you it's not an ego thing as some others here seem to confuse it with and if I wanted a big ego I'd use my real name! The quote bellow is one of the reasons I try so hard to help others out, for free! With perhaps 80% or more of the boat yards out there you do NOT get what you pay for and 8 times out of 10 can do the job better, use higher quality parts, and save a ton of money for BEER!! Quote from a poster on Sailnet: "One of my gate valve thru-hulls was replaced Friday in Rock Hall, MD. I spoke with the maintenence supervisor who said they billed for four hours of labor ($ 75.00 and hour), the parts were about $ 125.00. After reading all the information on this HAD I DONE IT MYSELF I would have made fiberglass backing plates (they used raw plywood). I would have glassed in the plates and used the fitting with the screw holes and put the three bolts thru the hull, glassed them in and painted over them. I would have followed the best ideas at several sites that had the greatest agreement amoung the posters. I continue to learn that the experience of the sailing community (those who have done work themselves) can provide in-depth "how-to knowledge" and the ability to determine what your own standards are. My work was paid for by the PO as a condition of sale ($ 475.00). If I did it myself I would have taken longer...done it better...the money saved would have been a bonus. That raw plywood will always bother me." That quote is why I continue to offer my insight here free of charge! Take or leave it but do keep in mind that it's free!!! Sharing is what it's all about

Those of us who do share our information, at great expense to no one, do so, I believe, for one basic reason: we've learned from others and would like to help in the same way. It's like when you help another boater when you're out on the water. Some day, you'll need some help and you should get it. What goes around comes around. And I'll bet there are many folks out there who have all sorts of good information, but don't, can't or won't type, or who don't have their own websites for references, or who don't have digital cameras or know how to or want to post pictures of their work. But they're around and we meet them on the docks and gain information from them, too. Each Association (regardless of boat manufacturer) has a relative handful of regular "contributors" who essentially create a "community" either in their local fleets or here online. I agree, the only work I've had done on my boat by others, required significant and time consuming correction. I can do it less expensively, or maybe for the same cost but do a better job. Besides, as I've said many times before, it's a safety issue -- if you know you're boat very well when you're out there, you're creating a much safer situation for you and your crew and guests, and the rest of us out there on the water. It's like parenting, we're not in it for the money, :):):)

This might be a good time for me to say thanks

to Maine,Rich,Ross,Don and all other posters who give alot of themselves. To me this site represents a great "bank" of information. You all have made great deposits of time and experience. I have made alot of withdrawls over the last year and have really learned a ton. I would like you to know that I pay on my debt in little payments as often as I can. I am not super technical minded and more hands on. Often I try to get people on my boat that show any interest in learning. I loan my boat to friends so they can have an adventure. I give my old sailing mags to any kid who will read them. Anything to pass on an interest in this great passtime that we all love. Thanks again to ya! Lance

I offer my best when I can and sometimes it helps

and sometimes it is ignored. I make my living repairing houses. Houses are as complex as boats just different. If a person believes that one approach to a problem is better than another then that is the method that should be used by that person. However it probably is not the only acceptable method and the person having the work done or doing the work has to live with the result. Sometimes I am asked for advise and then the petitioner goes off and does the job in the most temporary manner imaginable. I just chuckle and go on my way.

We're all here to learn

No one should take themselves so seriously as to be offended here. We are all here for the same two reasons - to learn, and to help others. Sometimes the discussion gets off track or far too involved in the minutia and I am often guilty of both but then, I too am an engineer so that explains everything...

Lance..

There is no need to thank us just do as Stu said "pay if forward". Everyone here learns even Rich, Stu, Ross and I, in fact I learned a heck of a lot from Rich in the this discussion, so as Stu said take what you've learned and pass it on! That is really the best thing you can do.. Minutia... yep that's us!!!

Doesn't hold true

This site is one of the very few places I know of where the old saying, "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" doesn't hold true. There is a ton of good information on here, and the price is right. The detailed knowledge of Ross, Main Sail, Rich and many others is invaluable to many of us. So to all of you who contribute to this board, a hearty thank you.
