Mechanical boom vangs

I have a 1984 Hunter 31. Would like to know pros or cons in installing a mechanical boom vang. Any brands better than others and why? Do they hold the boom up above head smashing height during accidental or controlled gybe? Thanks in advance, Mac Lindsay SV "Kitkatla"
