MD7A

Dear all,

with all the recent trouble with engine, looking around at the
dealers I noticed an offer with MD7A (from the 80's). I know the
later Vegas were powered with MD7A, with some extra hp, but I do not
know whether it is interchangeable with MD6A without modifications to
the earlier Vega generations or to what extent the parts of each
type of engine can be used as spares for the other. I suppose some of
you may have been considering this before and even have experience,
have you?

best regards

I am looking for a service manual for a MD7A volvo diesel. I have
the basic book but I am going to rebuild my motor this winter and
need the full service book. Yes I know everyone thinks it will cost
too much, but my brother owns a shop and all it will cost me is
bearings rings and gasketts....

Hi Rich

For a small donation to Vega funds I can send you the MD6A Workshop
Manual. Same as the MD7A but different rings and bores.

Even if you get the labour and expertise to rebuild the MD7A you will
find the cost of the parts astronomical. Just the pasrts for a complete
rebuild cost about £1700 ($2200). I have tried for many years to get the
parts cheaper and believe me you can only use Volvo parts but good luck
and deep pockets.

Steve,
How extensive is the manual? Will be able to a complete tear down...

What would you like for a donation?

As far as the prices go..I found a set of rings for $350.00 and now I just
need the gaskets and bearings...

Rich, You might be making a mistake. Considering the price of all the other
things that can (and will) break on the Volvo a replacement might be a
better deal. I bought a wrecked Vega to get the Volvo to use as a
replacement for my Albin. When I started thinking about it I came to the
conclusion that I could part things out and get a new Yanmar for a couple of
thousand dollars when I added what I could make on the parts I sold. I wound
up with a brand new engine that would go much longer before I'd have to
worry about things like injectors, water pumps, alternators, etc. It would
be 100 pounds lighter and I would have more power while saving on fuel.
Taking off a 100 pounds meant I could carry more stuff while maintainiing an
acceptable level of performance.
Had I known about the Beta engine I would have used it instead of the
Yanmar. I'd have better fuel economy and even less weight.
There are plenty of Volvos on sailboats. There is a pretty good market for
the parts you have. Think about it.
