MD6A Exhaust Manifold "Sooted Up"

Hi all.
I'm getting low power output from my MD6a - when alternator is
connected starting is difficult and she struggles to push boat much
above 3 knots to windward.

Apparently fuel and lube oil filters had not been replaced for some
time by prev owner.

Fuel & oil filters now replaced - water trap cleared, oil replaced and
tank topped up with clean diesel.

I got a lot of black smaoke before filters replaced - no black smoke now.

Mechanic suggests that manifold is sooted up.

Apparently this can create excessive back pressure which reduces
engine power.

I'm looking for advice on removing and cleaning the exhaust manifold.

My plan:
close seacock for engine cooling
undo the 4 bolts that secure manifold to engine.
(Steve Birch - thanks Steve - has warned me not to damage exhaust gasket)
Clean manifold - any tips?
re-attach manifold with 4 bolts
open sea-cock

Start engine

What have I forgotten? Advice welcome...

Thanks,

John Kinsella
