MD6A Engine Parts?

My son and I are trying to revive an MD6A that is installed in the
Vega that belongs to our sailing club. It is getting water into the
oil from somewhere. Question is, once we remove and tear this engine
down, is there a source of parts for the repair and rebuild? I've
searched all of the Volvo Penta websites (those written in English at
least)and have not been successful in finding anything except
replacement oil filters.
Any advice/help/encouragement would be appreciated. It is a
beautiful boat and in excellent condition except for the engine and
mainsail. I would like to keep this boat in its original
configuration, with its original engine if possible.
I am however realistic, if parts are not available, can anyone
suggest a suitable replacement engine?

At least some parts are available from Washington Marina in DC -- (202)
554-0222. Last year I had to get an oil pressure sensor unit and they were able
to come up with one. There's also another near-DC supplier that they recommend
as an alternative source. Washington Marina also used to, and may still, have
engine workshop manuals for the MD-6A and 7A. Mine was published in May 1975
and is Pub. No. 3023.

John Stanton and Steve Birch (VAGB) in England are also potential sources.

See my first posting to the list dated May 10 re "winch handle" for its
attachment of a list of the Vega parts (including MD6A parts) Stanton's offers.
Steve Birch can be reached at steve@firstnet.u-net.com I'm pretty certain he
also can supply you with an engine workshop manual.

A recent posting to the list also mentioned (as a source for replacement
thermostats):
AME Ship Equipment, Inc.
3464 N.W North River DR
Miami, 33142 Florida
Fax: +1 305-634-1291
Phone: +1 305-635-2401

VAGB is offering a replacement for the MD6A. Also, members of the American Vega
Association have successfully reported replacing their engines with, at least,
Westerbekes, Yanmars, Vetuses and BMW's. More knowledgeable members of this
email list may be able to help you out with details in the event you choose to
abandon the MD6A.

I'm going to cross-post this to the AlbinCruisers List as we have some
members who have found sources for the older Volvo's. How about it
AlbinCruisers?? Any ideas??

I have a Yanmar 2GMF (13hp) in my Vega. This replaced the old Albin gas
engine in 1982. It has been extremely reliable and plenty of power. They
are expensive but parts are available anywhere. I've heard good things about
the Betas as well, a Kubota base engine I think.

Dear Mr Bakers,

Yes parts for the MD6A are available from Volvo Penta, but there is also a
specialist in Sweden who is selling all parts His name is Gustafson. I will
look up his address in Sid Rosen's Newsletters and come back to you,

Regards, Henk Jansen
